I'm tackling guide replacement and resealing valve covers right now. Do I have to remove the plenum to get the valve covers off? Most hoses are in good shape, so I'd like to hold off on the plenum unless it's a whole lot easier that way. Any tricks for this project would be appreciated. The engine will remain in the car while I do the work.

Just to add, I've been corresponding with 911/Q45 via email about this major adventure he's on. Doing the covers wasn't originally part of the plan, so I thought it a good idea to solicit feedback from the "council". When I did my covers I pretty much didn't have a choice and I had to remove my plenum, but I thought I remember Prof Mike saying it was possible to do the covers with the plenum on. Just looking for some confirmation from you guys and, more importantly, any tips for the job that I may have forgotten.

I did my covers with the plenum on. The right side is not too bad the left side is the worst of them. On the left side you will need to remove the EGR, Throttle Body and several other items to get it off. There is a pipe that comes from under the plenum and goes over the valve cover that you will have to gently manipulate to get the cover off. 4-5 hours total should do the it completely.

If your Plenum hasn't been off in 7 years or 80k, it is a very good idea to pull it, clean it inside, check all, replace All hoses, examine the knock sensors and their harness etc, because about 1.5-2 hours of the work done to get the driverside valve cover off is applicable to the plenum job.Always a good idea to keep the throttle body and IAC gaskets on hand as they crack in almost any removal!
