. . .But if you would bear with me on this one. First, I'll introduce myself. Ive been a lurker on Nico for quite some time and I've even purchased a motor from Jhot, so Im a supporter here, not a slack-*** ricer.

Secondly, I think its important to say that I am a Technician at an Infiniti dealership and have a bit of expirience with Nissan products. This of course should only temper the seriousness of my problem. I will admit that my expertise lay mostly in OBDII vehicles, so it would seem that my 240sx is too simple? That and I dont have access to the FSM.

So, on to the issue at hand.

I own a 1991 240sx hatch, base model. I have recently installed an SR20DE (thats minus the "T") and have completed the nessesary 5-speed conversion from being an automatic. After all my checks of the normal items I decide to get the oil pressure up. Fuel pump fuse: pulled. CAS: unplugged. After a few good timely cranks I declared it time to fire it up. Reinstall all unplugged items and. . .

Nothing. She cranks and cranks, but no start. I quickly jump to my wiring. The first logical place to start seeing as how I had just hacked apart a perfectly good KA harness. Nope, everythings good. I take off the fuel lines and have the little lady turn her over for me and lo and behold, no fuel. I try the fuse and relay to no avail. Both good.

Then another thing catches my eye. As it would appear that a few dash waring lights dont turn off. As in I have the keys in my pocket and there are still lights on. Odd. Then I realise that there are a few things that dont work. Door chime, radio, and the fuel pump of course, to name a few. Brake lights/running lights, headlights, popup lights, dome light and auto seatbelts do work though.

After re-rechecking all of my engine bay wiring I am led to the SMJ under the drivers dash. This is after i tried unplugging the ignition switch, the Dash side of the ECU and a few pulled a few relays out. All with no effect on the mysterious internal electrical issues. As I unplug the SMJ bolt the lights go out. I plug it half way back in and the lights go out but the aformentioned items still do not work and the fuel pump is still inop. Fully plugged back in and I get the happy little lights back on. For refference sake the lights are brake and washer lights. The seat belt and door lights where also on but I had the seat belt unplugged and the door open. . .

So, all in all the point of this whole spiel is I was wondering if anyone else had a problem, similiar or otherwise, with their SMJ or inside fuse box wiring. Im going to be going through a more comprehensive battery of tests with a proper multimeter tomarrow, but Im inherently lazy and wanted to know if anyone else has had this issue. Its just really fustrating that all this isnt even my fault. If I fried something from my wiring then I can understand, but this seems to be a problem in the car completely unrelated to the swap. It has been sitting for 3 years. . .

Ive checked the pins and terminals for connection at the SMJ. All ok

Ive checked for corrosion. None.

Ive attempted to look for broken wires (found one already in the door harness for the auto seatbelts. Fixed).

Ive thrown the crappy chiltons manual across the room for have the worst wiring diagrams ever. Check.

I've tried to trace wires back from thier components to the SMJ, like the radio power signal.

I've found that EVERY damn component uses a l/w or b/r wire. No help. Re: Chiltons (throws book again).

Im going to be trying another fuel pump tomarrow, but I severly doubt thats the problem.

I was also wondering if perhaps there is another major connection or SMJ behind the dash that these components may run through? I would look but I want to make sure before I tear out my purdy interior to go hunting wires.

So, thank you for reading my short story. Remember to nominate me for the pulitzer. But I anyone has any ideas I would be much obliged.

Thanks

-Joe
