Be sure to take a picture of the bottom of your pistons. I want to see if the squirters hit the same place as mine.

The skirt shouldn't contact, but you can tell from the burring where the squirters hit. I had one squirter sort of survive. It had a deformity that spaced the nozzle off to the side away from the support. It only partially cracked at the base instead of being knocked off.

Those look a lot better than the ones that came out of mine. They were all broken into multiple pieces, as well as being mashed and mangled.

I sent all of my pictures and findings to Mahle. You can call the Piston Power Pack division and ask the engineers there if they bothered to redesign the pistons. However, if they didn't or they found that the issue wasn't something that could be solved via changing the design, you'll have to alter the squirters like I did.

Talked to Mahle today - they have not changed piston design and suggest reclocking squirters.

bleh i was gonna order these pistons too.. Seem like great pistons, but I'de rather not have to cut the locating pin off and clock the squirters. I don't know yet.

I would definately consider mahle. I know when I was working at Caterpillar Tech Center, I saw that they use mahle pistons on most of their engines. It sucks that they haven't revised this issue.

People are running cp pistons and having great luck with them. I hope mahle will correct this issue so they can compete.

I'll fix it.. It happened with the software change over when there were quotes inside quotes..

FIXED... It was some work, but it was a really good post, so I felt it was worth it..

I am curious about what factors cause some squirters to make contact and some not to. Is it all load? Could it also be rod strength or maybe even which main bolts are used (stock, arp) that brings the piston closer to the squirter? Obviously mahle hasnt changed the design because this isnt a issue for them or the motor they tested the pistons in isnt under full load

Mahle's motor they used didn't have squirters if i remember correctly. The piston is a generic design, they just alter the dimensions to work on a moor, slap it in to check clearances and then release the product. It sounds a bit half assed, but mahle designs a really good piston.

The issue withthe squirtersnwas that they barely contact the inside supports of the piston. Especially once you count heat expansion into the mix. The easiest solution I could devise was to simply reclock the squirters. Tge part is never under load, so there is no issue with shaving that peg a little bit

Just curious but why not shave the squirter nipple off? Or is the piston contacting the squirter in another place. From the pic it looks like contact is made with the actual nipple. I mean I'm sure shaving it down would alter the oil spray slightly

You could try to shave the nipple down, I suppose. But reclocking them is a better alternative I believe.

I'm sure reclocking is a better solution and i'll prob end up doing this over plugging or shaving them dwn.
