2021 Rogue SV AWD Silver/Charcoal.

Cummins reported that sub 5 micron particles can cause wear. Automatic transmissions contain a few strong permanent magnets. My MDX transfer case as inch long magnets as part of the drain bolt that extends into the oil.
Magnets are proven "technology". I'll stipulate that many engines go 300K, 500K, or more miles WITHOUT magnets.

As soon as I get a new car, I put a magnet on the drain bolt and filter. Filtermag is expensive and I have one on my Accord that I've been using for 15-20 years on several cars.

Magnetic oil pan drain bolts are not new. I had them on my 92 and 94 Alfa 164.

On the first oil change, wiping the tip of the bolt shows impressive amounts of grey metal debris that looks like pencil smudges mixed with oil. Cutting the filter open shows the same on the inner metal wall in the pattern of the magnet.

I have a "Turbomag" (Canada) that is extremely strong that can go on the end of the filter or drain bolt (depending on pan configuration. I left the large Turbomag on the drain bolt (and test fit on the filter).

I put the 10 Nd magnets on the filter housing. I will switch to a single larger magnet for the filter on the first change.

The filter is tiny and as mentioned by at least one here, the Nissan truck filter is longer and I plan to use it.
The nd magnets are readily available on Amazon etc.

I got these 10 from HD for $6.00 and all they had were these little ones.
I'd like one about the size of a quarter which I plan to get. .

The clip removal tool makes removing the multiple plastic belly pan clips a breeze.
Two 10mm bolts at the front edge of the belly pan need to be removed (my Maverick on order uses multiple Torx bolts)
Oil changes will be very simple with the right tools.

Put the magnets on the SIDES of your filter . Magnets on the end where the bypass valve is may just BLAST those attracted particles DIRECTLY into main oil galley when relief opens under hard acceleration or cold start .
The explosive opening of bypass can very well do this :lolling:
Like sweeping dirt into a corner pile - then sneezing hard blowing it everywhere. :rotflmao
Better to put magnets on those " flats " 1/2" up.

Good point. The filter mag is arched and designed to go on the sides. The black plastic capped turbo mag is specifically designed to go on the end (doesn’t mean it’s ideal vis a vis the bypass valve).

I’ve been using the Turbomag for 20 years on the filter end with no apparent harm.

It’s a good idea to put magnets on the filter sides on my first oil change. It will be just as effective and cannot do any harm.

I’m thinking of changing oil at about 1500 miles. There is considerable debate about that because Honda in particular is said to use a special brake and oil does not recommend an early oil change I have a little to no experience with Nissan. Any thoughts on when to do the first oil change?

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have a round one on the end of my oil filter too. I use to have a filter mag on at the same time, but that thing rusted and fell apart after a few years. Piece of crap, but they were good while new until they became garbage. So I never did replace that thing.

I been using a magnetic drain plug since the beginning. Personally, I see no harm using magnets. :mike

Cummins showed they hold particles that cause wear. Certainly no harm. I think end cap magnets are perfectly safe but the filter mag concept of an around the body magnet I think is a better idea. Easy enough to get that effect if I spread my little ones around the body of the filter. I have experience with both and either is better than no magnet.

CHANGE INTERVAL :
Juke brand new was recommended to come for oil change at 4800 - 5000 or so miles by Nissan dealer . I made apmt and had 1st change on the 1.6 Direct Injected Turbo at 4900 mi , and stipulated the 5-30 Nissan Ester oil to be sure it got it. I believe she broke-in fine from that.
I STILL do believe in " engine brake-in period " to be significant , new technology aside :spitout:
