Anyone seen those magnetized oil drain plugs for sale? They claim to attract metal particles in your oil to filter them out. Anyone have an opinion on them?

Sounds too good to be true. I dont see how a drain plug could do so much good.

If they're anything like the manual transmission drain plug, it would probably be worth the investment. Whenever I pull the plug on the transmission, there's always a whole bunch of little metal filings.

Yours may already be magnetized. Mine on my Suburabn is... I don't know about the Q.

It's a good idea, as TD said.

I've seen quite a few people recommending the magnetized drain plugs. I plan on picking one up. They aren't that expensive, and it's worth a try.

If the magnet was ever to become dislodged and go into the engine, that would be bad. Id rather spend the few extra bucks and be safe.

Don't know how worth it they are, but my friend has one and it does attract some metal.

what if you just put a strong magnet OUTSIDE of the oil pan...wouldnt it magnetize the whole thing?

S14's drainplugs are magnetized? Maybe my motor is just very clean or something, because I have never seen metal filing on my drain plug when I change the oil. I just changed it today, too...

yeah. a chunk of magnet that broke loose would suck major. but, I do trust jb weld.

I've heard of someone sticking a magnet to the outside of the pan, and all little pieces of metal get drawn to the pan right there

OE S13 drain plugs are definitely not magnetized. Just to double check, I tested a spare drain plug I had on hand. Not magnetic.

I still think it's worth a few extra bucks to see how well it works, and plan on picking one up at some point.

Not sure how easy it would be to magnetize your existing drain plug. Might be worth looking into.

say you put that magnet outside the oil pan. and it does indeed collect filings. but they never leave. they wont come out when you drain the oil. you could just remove the magnet then hope they all come out then put the magnet back on picking up the leftovers. but then one day it will indeed fall off some how or another and every last bit of filing will be set free at that moment (probably on the highway when your engine is at a constant ~3K rpm) and the engine will explode.

maybe not quite like that but something bad, you know.

I had one in my 02 blazer...first oil change, found quite a few shavings on the tip of it! Not so many the next time, but it was still worthwhile to have :)

If you get a strong magnet, it won't come off. The magnetic force holds it to the pan. We put them in our race car engines, both in the transmission and oil pan.

I'd hate to say it, but Spoon Sports make them for Hondas, they should fit Nissans fine.
