So Ive been calling around machine shops lately, looking for price quotes and discussing with people what they think will be necessary for my KA shortblock.

One thing that I keep hearing over and over is Magnafluxing. A couple shops were actually telling me that I should have EVERYTHING magnafluxed, a process thats gonna cost me about $125.

Now, as I understand it, magnafluxing is just a method to check the integrity of parts, correct? I know that the area is polarized and little metal filings are puffed at it so that they collect in cracked areas etc... Unless the machine shops are talking about a different type of magnafluxing, do you really think its worth it that I do this on EVERYTHING? A $125 prelimary check for cracks? Eh... do I really need to worry THAT much about cracks that I cant even see in a 97 block?

ehh?

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't do it. When was the last time you heard of a cracked KA block? When was the last time you heard of a cracked 200,000 mile junkyard found Chevy 350 block? Yeah...thats what machine shops deal with most often ;)
