i have tried everything. Even Wes's MAFS cleaning steps. The problem is not the MAFS, but the connector. About every 40 miles (every time i make a stop somewhere) i will have to get out of the car and push the connector in firmly too avoid stalling, bucking and bad idle. dealer said to get new connector i would have to get a new wiring harness. does anyone know if i cut and splice a connector off an 95 Q could i use it on a 91Q

Joe used to have the connector parts 1-888-216-5328:

zerothread?id=135741

****Connector Part Numbers****

38751-123 Pins (you need 3) $1.54 ea38751-112 Connector Shell $17.08Total: $21.70

And no, a 95 won't fit your 91. You need a 90-94.

Before you change out your connector- Do you still have the metal 3-sided clip that locks the male to female MAF connections together? From what you described it may be missing. It looks just like the clips on the injectors, CAS, EGR solenoid, etc. If it's missing you can probably fab one up from a stiff piece of metal wire.

Yea! Use a really big plumbers or welding torch so you melt the MAF.

Study the older MAF thread where they destoyed the MAF and ecu making a simple fix ..................only took a month + to get the Q running again.

As we say owners and shade tree techs do more to destroy working Q than any defect.

Just get the correct parts to assemble a new MAF connector and bedone with this problem for another 7 years.

Duh!

25 watt soldering iron will do fine and some lead wire...or go and get a new connector and harness.

Are you saying that the connector cannot be soldered? The soldering gun I use could only melt plastic if in contact for several minutes.

As to the "simple fix" didn't that owner cut the wires with the MAF connected and with power to the car? If that is what you're referencing then this is a poor example to demonstrate your point. Properly using a soldering gun to fix an electrical connection is in no way comaprable to cutting the wires to an electrical device that has power to it.

yeah the clip is still there but it still allows the connector to move around a couple of mm

You solder the new pins to the wires and then push them into the connector. The gun will not melt the new connector as you will not have to expose it to the gun. I continue to be amazed by the resistance to the simple repair by many Q owners. The factory pins were not soldered, but merely crimped. The crimping releases and breaks loose over the years. There is no fix other than to replace the connector. No duct tape or wiggling with "repair" it. You are doing the right thing and you will not have this issue in the future.

Did you read Aus94Q45 post above?

Leave the ignition off! Better yet, disconnect the battery.
