I have heard talk that getting a z32 mafs is a good idea. Is the z32 mafs that much better than the r33 mafs?

Yes. The R33 MAF is a 70mm whereas the Z32 is an 80mm MAF. Larger opening = more flow.

does the z32 MAF plug in in place of the r33 MAF? if not, what do you have to do to get it to work?

No, the plugs are different. To get it to work, you'll have to find a wiring diagram for the Z32 and the RB.
