MAF sensor

My Pathfinder will run rough and start searching for a steady idle-- low to high and back down again. over and over. when I disconnect the MAF sensor and the engine stalls, I reconnect and restart the motor and it will idle smoothly. Is this leading to a bad MAF or ECU, or the wiring?

Once it idles smoothly, I will travel for a while and then it will start up again, rough idle. And then the remedy will be the same. I travel to Northern Arizona a lot, (always uphill) and higher altitudes when this occurs. However, it will occur at home in the Valley. I had a new motor put in last summer and had the transmission rebuilt about 8 years ago.I really love the vehicle and take it anywhere. I wish it would last forever.

Also, any suspension hints I should be aware of????
