The sensor is very delicate, but what I've used in the past has been to dip a q-tip in alcohol and gently, I mean gently, clean the insides. I've also been known to use Contact Cleaner Quick Dry only. At all costs, never touch the sensor directly with your fingers. CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner is new and less prone to dissolving other components in the MAF sensor. Do yourself a favor and remove the MAF sensor from the vehicle before attempting to clean it. Also, I'd make sure the air filter housing, air filter and all associated ducting are intact, clean inside and not leaking dirt. This will keep you from needing to clean or replace the MAF sensor anytime soon.
The process is fairly easy, but requires a delicate touch and no intrusive neighbors like Vern coming over to check on you. Make sure that whatever solvent you use leaves no residue whatsoever.
As a side note, K&N filters have been known to leave oil deposits on the MAF sensor, so I've been reluctant to use it (plus I'm not sure it's really all that great as a product.
One quick point, I'm no car expert, so I'm sure someone else here will chime in and point out something I might have left out or mis-stated.
