The sensor is very delicate, but what I've used in the past has been to dip a q-tip in alcohol and gently, I mean gently, clean the insides. I've also been known to use Contact Cleaner Quick Dry only. At all costs, never touch the sensor directly with your fingers. CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner is new and less prone to dissolving other components in the MAF sensor. Do yourself a favor and remove the MAF sensor from the vehicle before attempting to clean it. Also, I'd make sure the air filter housing, air filter and all associated ducting are intact, clean inside and not leaking dirt. This will keep you from needing to clean or replace the MAF sensor anytime soon.

The process is fairly easy, but requires a delicate touch and no intrusive neighbors like Vern coming over to check on you. Make sure that whatever solvent you use leaves no residue whatsoever.

As a side note, K&N filters have been known to leave oil deposits on the MAF sensor, so I've been reluctant to use it (plus I'm not sure it's really all that great as a product.

One quick point, I'm no car expert, so I'm sure someone else here will chime in and point out something I might have left out or mis-stated.

Welcome to NICO

INMHO replacing your air filter at regular intervals will do much to keep your MAF clean. My experience has been never try to fix anything that isn't broke. My air filters seem to get pretty dirty after 8-10k miles. It is a 15 min job to change them and they tun about $10.00.

Most oil based fiters won't actually foul the MAF. This was covered at great length in the Maxima forum at one point. I actually advocated the use of a non oiled filter like an AEM Dryflow. I have since learned a lot about the filters, and read some pretty cool stuff. I will link you when I am able to find the articles. (I'm sick, and doped up on cold meds and pain killers, searching the netz isn't happening right now)

The sugestion about the CRC MAF cleaner I agree with. That's what I have used, and had no problems with it. I personally won't touch the element with anything. Fingers or a Q-tip. I'm not that gentle or brave. I just spraw it down a lot, until it looks clean.

i dont use K&N, i have an AEM cold air intake with a bypass valve.... so there are no oil deposits on it....but since i took it all off to install a plenum spacer and clean the throttle body i thought i might as well clean it while its off...

Just spray it directly on the element. Don't get it too close, because the pressurized fluid *could* damage the element. Yes, it will clean it without touching it. I'm sure it will clean it faster if you do touch it, but I personally wouldn't. Just be generous with the can. It's only like $5, so if you use the whole can, big deal.

Cool. Be careful, and good luck.

You should take some pics and write an article about how to clean the MAF. I'll give you a custom title for it, as long as you write a good article.

is the MAF really something you need to clean often?

I've never heard that being super important.

As long as you keep the air filter clean, usually it's not that necessary. Maybe every 50k.
