A month or so ago my car started bucking and almost dying for no aparent reason. It was very random; would do it for a few seconds, only once or twice a week.....Typical symptoms associated with a MAF malfunction.
After cleaning and tightening the connector the issue went away...only to come back a week or so later.

I was getting ready to look for a used MAF, but decided to take a chance and try "to look inside the MAF": I removed the top plastic cover (flat ,square) - I carefully removed the "ruberry" seal around the border and pulled the top.
By doing this I got access to the three electrical connections between the internal parts and the wires that go out to the terminals in the external connector. I decided to re-solder these connections.....Put the cover back; applied a heavy bead of black RTV around the edge to seal it back,....
The whole thing took me 20 min. or so...

The car has been running with no issues since then....I actually get the impression that the shifting is smoother now...

I thought this could help others experiencing similar issues....

This seems to be a problem that everyone might encounter sooner or later. But yes, what paranoidjack said...report back to this thread if it starts again!

It might be too early to "claim victory", but I am happy to report that for the last week or so of the same daily commute, the car has ran perfectly. Not a singly hicup...
I will report back in a few weeks. Hopefully nothing changes.... :)

I have been experiencing similar issue although very random. I have a couple MAF so I could probably give it a go. Probably won't make it worse. :)

Did you notice that the solder joints looked iffy?

Quick update on this: It has been a month a half and the car is still running great. Very smooth...no more hiccups.
Re-soldering the internal connections in the MAP sensor did the trick.

Seems like a lot electronics had issues early to mid-90s for longevity.

Good work! I like it! Sometimes this kind of repair is exactly what is needed.

Yeah, just ask Mitsubishi (or Chrysler for that matter)! HA!

Guess you'd have to had worked on them... ;)

Un...not really unless you count Lexus LCD displays that failed in the heat after a few years.

Or the climate controller capacitor failure, or the amplifier capacitor failure...

Mid-90's Honda's all the way up to the late 2000's have climate control power transistor problems. Mitsubishi (and the Chrysler cars that used Mitsubishi parts) had module failures regularly. Lexus LCD's suck and so do their instrument clusters. And so on...
