What is the proper way to unplug the MAF sensor on a 90 Maxima SE? Does it just unplug or are there clips that hold the plug on?

Thanks.

IIRC, there is at least one metal clip, maybe two? I haven't taken mine off in several years. It was pretty easy to figure out just by looking at it.

FYI, the MAF sensor is the same for all 3rd gens, regardless of year or VG/VE engine 89-94 if yours is bad.

Yep, there's a small thin metal clip. You'll need a small flat blade screwdriver to pop the ends loose. It WILL try to escape. Once the clip is gone the connector comes apart easily.

The car is idling rough. I know the way to test the MAF is to pull the plug and see if the idle smooths out. When I pulled the plug, the car completely shut off. Ideas/suggestions?

You can't test for a bad maf by unplugging it since the car can't run without it. You can test for a bad connection by jiggling the connection, though.

You can try cleaning the MAF with a non-harsh alcohol based electrical cleaner.Another option is a cheaper rebuilt MAF. After core refund it'll probably run you ~$40. If the new MAF doesn't fix the issue you can always take it back and start looking for new causes. I've had a rebuilt MAF in my car for a year or so with no negative side-effects.

CRC makes a MAF cleaner also.

I've seen a couple of threads on other forums that say you can test the MAF by unplugging it so that's where I came up with this but as I said it shut off.

Probably will go the pull and clean route before getting the Bosch reman for it since it's by far the less expensive way to go.

I would test it with the multimeter first before spraying itwith anything.
