i am haveing a problem with my car that i cannot figure out. heres what i have - redtop sr20 with 300zx maf controled by safc computer. and heres what its doing...

when the maf is hooked up the car will start but the rpms jump around, it sputters, then dies. it is almost like there is a husge vaccume leak or something.

when the maf is disconnected the car starts and runs almost like normal just in the safe mode with 2.5k RPM rev limit, and it isnt very drivable.

tonight i was messing with it and i hooked the maf to it with it not conected to the airway and it ran fine like normal. when i reconnected it to the turbno it acted up again.

i bought a new MAF for it thinking that would solve the problem. the new maf that i bought is a jecs type N62 with the orange lable on the side. the old maf does not have the orange lable. it only has a silver lable with a series of numbers.

could the new maf i bought be the wrong type?

ps. im not replacing a stock MAF with a 300zx. i have had a z32 maf on the car running and now im having these problems.

What are the numbers on the 2 MAFS?

When you install a Z32 MAFS on your car you need to change the settings in the SAFC to 2 in and 6 out. Did you do that first? Is the ECU throwing any codes?

SpeedRacer1 has it right. Although there are some guys that are running 2 in 5 out and it works for them too. Try 2 in 6 out first and if it doesn't work try 2 in 5 out to see if that works for you.

5 out is for an S14 or S15 SR20DET. I run 5 in 6 out since I am using an S15 MAFS, dont ask.

old - 9Y06B

new - 228603 P00 A36-000 N62 , with 3107D under that.

i will also check my safc settings. my friend was doing something with the safcon the way home before it messed up so that might be it.

thanks for the help. its now been 2 weeks since ive had my daily driver.

Those numbers from the first MAFS are the wrong numbers, Nissan numbers for a MAFS would go: 22680 ***00.

Which means that second MAFS is a Z32 for sure, you can tell because the numbers are 22680-30P00.

Definately check those SAFC settings, the stock ECU cant run a Z32 MAFS without the help of an SAFC or other fuel controller.

could you please walk me through on how to check the settings you are talking about? i bought my current setup from someone and left the safc set to what it was. there was no need to change it.

i dont have a manual, and dont have much experiance with the safc.

thanks for the help.

Well it doesnt really matter, turn the key to the on position but not actually running.

Go to the main menu and choose the "etc" menu.Go to the "Sensor Type" menu.Select "Hot-Wire" if it wasnt already selected. The screen will then go to a screen with # in and # out.Select 2 in, 6 out. If you get prompted to a "Sens Cal" screen just leave it at 1 & 1. Thats it, you can go back to the main menu and start the car.

yup. hit the nail on the head. that was the problem exactly.

the only problem now is that alll of the fuel settings were also erased and i dont know what they were set to.

not to all: DONT let stupid honda owners who think they know whats going on ride in the front seat of your car!
