It seems, every time I pour some fuel injector cleaner into Layla, she starts running badly, coughing, sputtering, shifting funny, and getting TERRIBLE fuel economy.

I bought a couple cans of X-1R fuel injector cleaner (I usually buy Techron since I run exclusively Chevron Supreme in all my cars, but the X-1R stuff was 75% off at Advance Auto). Lola ran great, no changes. Layla ran like she was on her last legs.

I was driving her to church last night with Evie, and we stopped for a Happy meal at Mickey D's. I sent her in for the burgers, and I popped the hood. While the engine was running (idling about 2,100 RPM ), I wiggled the MAF connection, and BAM!, 600 RPM, and so smooth, that I thought the engine quit (Except for the fan blade whirring dangerously close to my extremeties! )

It looks like I will be working on my electrical connections this weekend.

Just though I would pass on my experience. It might help some others experiencing weird shifts and poor gas mileage.

The car usually flashes a CEL, if the MAF is dirty, or it acts up like that. It must have been too intermittent.

Now, she runs like a dream again !

A Q belongs at Ruth Crist not Macky D's that may be part of the problem.

It gets some disease from proximity to lesser vehicles.

Careful the cheap injector cleaners contain Methanol [does more harm than good] on older style rubber fuel hoses and o-rings and winding insulation.

Yeah, but they don't have those cool prizes!

We had exactly 20 minutes to eat and drive 20 miles. IT was McD's or wait 3 hours to eat. A man's gotta eat.

Anyway, you should have seen the looks my car got from all the homeboys in the joint!

Modern fuel contains fuel injector cleaner additives.

According to Nissan you aren't supposed to run actual pour in additives as well.

Jeff:

Get the replacement plug and connectors from Joe (about $20). It is easy to install. A quick cure.

Actually in a NISSAN TSB they authorized use of BG44k... Thats it, and only for use on the 9093 injectors...

For the past 10 years refiners have discovered a way to just put enough to kinda work in fuel...........as the EPA never tests fuels. The frugality saves a Million dollars per day vs putting in enough to satisfy old injector types. After all these cars are legally obsolete after 7 years.

The new 4.5/5.6 engines are problem children requiring BG44k at ever oil change to clean if used in city driving without the mandantory weekly blow the soot out exercise.

The Japanese sample our fuels and shake their heads........thus BG44K.

Soon you'll have to buy the BG44k by the case [24 cans] if our fuel does come back to spec soon!
