MAF going bad or adapter junk

I put on a cone filter and adapter a while back that was junk(no EGR tube and leaky) and it made my car run crappy. So... I put the stock airbox on and it seemed to run fine. So I bought a better designed adapter and it is kinda doing the same thing but not as bad. Sputtering at about 4 grand and starting off. Is there something that I should check/adjust to accommodate for more air going in or are these adapters junk? BTW its an 89 SOHC
