At some point does the MAF connection just wear out? ...and is it easy to replace or should the dealer do it.

Nearly 4 years ago at 113k I got a new MAF unit. To this day I think it was just a bad connection, but boards like this didn't exist.

Recently I started experiencing that dreaded drop and then surge of the engine. So I got out and wiggled the connection and all is well.

So I guess I am wondering if the connection is just reaching a point where the contacts are not meeting correctly and a new one is in order.

Please post thoughts.

Terminals are subject to corrosion, which makes for a bad connection. So you scrape away the corrosion, thus removing some of the substrate. Do that over and over, and the connections gets worse and worse. The MAF is a very easy thing to replace, just not a cheap part. The harness and connector, on the other hand, are part of the main engine harness, which isn't cheap either and which is a real PITA to replace. If you could find a connector in good shape at a scrapyard, you could easily cut and splice it.Look at the terminals closely...I think one side is designed to corrode scarificially....probably the MAF side, which means the harness might be OK. You can use a dental pick to pry on the pin clips to provide a more secure connection, and use dielectric grease to slow the corrosion.

The connector is available separtately, but I'm not sure of a source - maybe aftermarket. T3 has (or had) a source for them.

The pins for the connector are part# are J-38751-50 should be able to get them from nissan or infinity . Cost is about $40 for 10 of them. Sounds like a lot till you price out the harness! Just take a small pick and release the clip holding the term. be carefull not to break the connector housing that can not be replaced. Another problem is the wire, it corrodes just like the injector connectors and wires. Cut back the wire till you have good clean wire and extend if needed. Just don't crimp, crimp and solder (tin wire first) and use dielectric grease on the connector and on the solder joint before you heat shrink. You can also replace all your injector and selonid connectors with the new improved style, just go to nissan and ask for the injector connector kit(you'll need two kits) or more if you do the seloniods as you should, thay are for the u11 and z31 models. If need be I'll find the number just don't know it by hart like the term connectors. I've seen more mis-dias for bad injectors turn out to be just corroded term and wire. I had a supply of aftermarket connectors from WORTH but vender said no longer being made, if anyone has a better solution please post it to help us all.

The connecter I got at T3 appeared to be aftermarket - but I'm not sure about the source. It included pins and the connector housing.

So you have them in stock there Joe? I asked TJ a couple of years ago, but he wasn't aware of anything available at that time...
