I have been a HUGE lurker, being provided with both great knowledge and frustration in equal proportions due to scattered, incomplete info in the 02-04 m44. I came across a 2003 in need of some care where the owner was willing to trade my Ford Focus for, haha. So I've been plinking away at little things here and there, slowly restoring it back to operational normality (crank position sensor has been a HUGE bother...). Most recently I've discovered that the air temperature filament in the MAF appears to have been broken. Not sure if it was tampered with or got so hot the glass burst. My question is: this appears easy to replace; is that possible to avoid having to purchase a replacement sensor/assembly?

I have lusted after this model not long after release, and I'm excited to finally have one of the cars from my "gotta have" list, haha. I appreciate any input.

Thanks!

I am NOT an auto technician, but would imagine that since those filaments are the working ends of the assembly, they will probably be near the cost of replacing the whole gizmo. Plus what if you replace those filaments and some other part goes titz-up next month? Wouldn't it be better (though expensive) to just replace it and have an entire new piece that includes a warranty?

The sensor itself is working fine, but due to the busted heater element it is running a bit rich; I can smell it. I've been out of work for a few weeks due to a back injury, and will continue to be out for some time. So my budget is limited. I was just curious if this little element could be affordably replaced, but I'm not finding anything online at all about it. There are used sensor assemblies for around $50 on ebay, so I'll probably go that route. Meh...

Thanks for your input!

I would look into other Nissans with the filaments. I believe the pathfinders for instance have them, but I can't recall exactly what color it was etc. Good luck

Just curious- is this causing a "Check Engine" light? If so, what code is it throwing?

thanks

There are all kinds of lights glaring at me from the dash, haha. (traction control systems, airbag, abs)
But yes, the CEL is constantly lit. I finally figured out the crank and cam position sensor issues, so at least it has been reliable since then. I haven't cleared and run codes on it since my original post, so I'll do that and post what I've got here in a little bit.

Grab a sensor from a Q45 from the boneyard?
Beware that the bad cam & crank sensors combined with a rich condition may contribute to your cats failing. (A $2.5K fix at minimum.)
