So lets say I get a crank kit then and have them assemble for me, with new acl bearings and clean up the bottom end for me. Port the head and call it a day. What should one expect to pay?
As to the question you asked, Yes.
Someone in your area will have to answer that, but it's probably around 1k~1.5k with headwork. A lot of it depends on how far they go with the head. Saying you have headwork is like saying you have mods. Lots of variation, I suppose. I would definitely shop around since some shops are really high for no apparent reason. I would recommend having the block done locally (due to practicality) and check the SR20 forums for a competent SR20 head guy to ship the head to. When I used to run a speed shop, I outsourced headwork to the specialists/artists in their area. 4G63 heads went from my location in Ohio to Tulsa, OK.With a crank kit you will need a more substantial amount of balance work.
I would do this:You disassembleThey:Hot tank all partsInspect all partsPressure test headClean up bearing surfacesCheck and re-true blockCheck and re-true headStreet port with new seals and valve jobClean up bearing surfaces on blockRe-balance for new (if any) hard partsEstablish proper clearances for race bearings with a street/strip clearance in mind (if they are capable of deviating from factory specs)
You:Check all their workUse compressed air and multiple cans of brake parts cleaner to blow out all journals and nooks/cranny'sassemble valvetrain and head to block and time it up
Bear in mind that a machine shop visit is like a mud 'bath' is to a person. You need copious amounts of cleaning after it's over; even if things are 'better'. ;-)Don't try to snap pics, throw it together and go boost the @#$* out of it.
Your first thing should be to stop in (not phone call) and talk to someone there. Tell them what you have and what you're after. What you use it for, etc. That will tell you who you might trust and who you think is just patronizing you for your money. Establish timelines, as well. They don't call it machine shop jail for nothing. Take what they tell you; double it and then add a week. You don't want to get pushy with them. That'd be like telling your tuner 'to hurry up and finish already!'.
Hope that helps,Mark
