I need to know roughly what machine shops charge to do the following items, seeing as how they are the only things I really can't do myself....

1) Bore and polish block2) Resurface block and head deck3) EXTRUDE HONE charges how much to port polish I/H/E4) Balance and Knife Edge a crank5) Regrind (5-angle) valves

My terminology may be kind of funky, but I need a rough price for getting all this done. Assembling it I can do with enough time, and I'll be bringing them all the parts already dissasembled (aka, an empty head, valves all in a bag, etc). Can anyone give me a rough cost idea??

Okay, well seeing as I have had so many things done to my KA Block, ill help you out.

1) You dont bore the KA block, you hone it, and ive never heard of polishing the block.2) If your referring to shaving the head, i wouldnt suggest is unless your going for a NA Beast, but otherwise $603) Dont know anything about extrude honing but give it about $75-1004) Balance $100 Knife edge $855) The KA has a valve job stock, so probably just back cutting the valves would be a good idea, but about $50

And BTW, Dont mix up your valves, they need to go back where they came from, same goes with your little valve spring cover things (i dont know the technical term, but you know what i mean)

I guess I'm just so used to rebuilding blocks that have had blown headgaskets or whatever, and not taking any risks. I guess it all does depend on whether it's warped or not though. Thanks for the prices though, that was exactly what I wanted to hear.

No prob, i might not be right on the target, my engine is sitting at a mainly v8 shop, but an engine is an engine yanno.

I just love when people ask questions that I want to ask...

I'm still shopping around but I just got some quotes. I don't know if I would call them a "machine shop", as they strictly build racing engines.

Block prep $400 deburr, align honed, o-ringed, etcCrank prep $100 magnaflux, polish and balancePre-assembly $160 mock assemble, measuring displacement and actual compression ratio

Final assembly $250 of the short block+$150 for head attachment

This includes no parts and no head work.

Thats seems a little steep for the block prep, but everything else seems good. What kind of internals your getting?

That really does seem REALLY steep for block prep, I know places around here that will do it for less than half of that. Heck, my buddy with a milling machine does it for $75, but he isn't a professional shop.

It might depend if they are putting a receiver groove into the head or not, but yeah, after looking over my receipts, I am about half that, so yeah, thats way over priced.

I think it's steep too, and I will continue to shop around but I in the end I won't mind paying it just because I got a good feeling from the guy.

As for internals... I'm not pleased with my shopping so far. From RaceEng.com forged Wiseco pistons are $389 which I think is reasonable, but I can't find forged rods for less than $600-700. And I'm going to have a hard time with that. I'm thinking I may just go OEM if I can't find cheaper forged rods.
