Okay, so im swapping a SR20DET black top into my 92 240SX... i have an HKS hi-power exhaust, and currently have a rejection sticker from my KA24DE before... is there any way to get this to pass emissions in MA? and is there any way to fix it so that it does pass? would getting a Catyalist converter fix it? I really need to pass emissions does anyone know of a place here in MA? please email me at [email protected] if you feel more comfortable that way....

Here's the bottom line:

The SR20DET is NOT emissions legal in the U.S. The SR can be cleaned up by using a CAT and keeping most of the OEM emission devices intact such as the EGR valve.

If the emissions testing in your state doesn't require a visual inspection of the engine compartment and your 240SX is an S13 which doesn't use OBD-II, then the car should pass. If the car is an S14 with OBD-II and the emissions testing equipment plugs into the OBD-II connector, then the car will fail; also if the facility does visual checking of the engine compartment, the car will fail.

rwd sr's don't have an egr, they've the aiv though. if it's just a sniffer, you can put two cat's on the dp and get it to pass the sniffer that way. if there's a visual part you're screwed. if there's odb2 you're screwed. have fun.

Depending on what your state tests for, you can use high flow cat's which won't hurt performance much if any at all. Most dyno comparisons I've seen between test pipes and high flow cats show a 1hp difference if there was one. Hardly enough to justify a ticket that in my state can land your car with a ref.

i seen a high flow one from "carsound"... i have no idea how cats are installed? im guessing their on the exhaust pipe... i dont wanna cut/weld my brand new HKS cat... and will it bolt up wit a 85mm piping? i dont want to re-strict any flow... im going to try and get it inspected with the HKS first, and see if they'll pass it... if not then i guess i have to buy one or two cats. i have no idea how i would know how many to buy....

my pal in raynham just bought and evo and is getting a tbe/high flow cat, etc. i asked him how he'd pass emissions and he said it's just a visual.

but yeah, two cats should pass you unless you also have a visual.

visual = visual inspection to see if it looks like it should out the factory.

High flow cats are nearly useless, biggest mistake i made was buying one and throwing out the stock one for my old Integra(sold). Make sure you buy an OEM replacement cat, not a highflow. Highflows are nice if you dont care that they arnt doing a gdamn thing to help emmisions.

several different types of high flows out there. if you're in an area that tests for NOx, don't get the catco. You need 3 way catalytic converters, most are 2 way without the NOx scrubbers. But there are high flow cats that are 3 way, so no they're not nearly useless, you just bought the wrong one.

if i remember correctly in mass they do a visual inspection of the car...they look for massive rusted areas which could pose a potential danger...they look at ur engine bay...they lift ur car and make sure that u have a catalytic converter....if u dont have a cat ur screwed cus u wont pass inspection...they will pretty much stop the inpection there and tell u to get a cat installed...

MA is actually pretty strict about their inspections...they're almost on the same level as Cali when it comes to getting an inspection sticker...just make sure to get a catalytic converter installed on ur down pipe... i would personally go to nissan and get one of their cats, though it would restrict airflow it would also clean ur car up quite a bit

the year of the car actually plays a crucial roll...if ur car is an 89-94 theyll just put a sniffer up ur tailpipe and run ur car on a dyno to measure exhaust gasses...

if ur car is a later version which comes with OBD-II then they will hook ur ecu up to their computer and run the car on a dyno, and ur ECU will tell them gass levels and wut not...

hoped this helps man...i could b wrong on the 240sx years that came with OBD-II

best of luck to u man...
