Just my 2 pence:
I drove a new M56 last week when I had the black beast in for a check-up, alignment, and rotation. I was extremely impressed by the acceleration, the throttle response, and the smooth way the engine did whatever I asked. It drove just as smooth and agile as mine but with a noticeable increase in power. I personally don't see the need for any engine mods, but that's just me. The only mod I would consider is Megan catbacks - they would enhance the exhaust sound and increase the volume, BUT not to the point where all you hear is exhaust inside the car..
BTW, you mentioned you haven't purchased an M but are considering it - Mine has 78k miles, has had NO work aside from reg maintenance, and is now approaching 7 years old. I still have to tell peeps it's NOT new and they are shocked when I tell them the year and mileage. I am convinced that, if you take care of these cars, they will run and look like new indefinitely. Mind you, some maintenace is pricey, but this is NOT a chevy or ford (and it won't wear out like a chevy or ford).
