A buddy of mine recently purchased a 2013 G37S 6 speed. I went to check it out this weekend and we ended up doing a couple pulls on the highway to compare acceleration. We started about 50-55 top of 2nd and went through 3rd and partly into 4th before we were coming up on vehicles ahead of us. It was close in third but once we hit the top of 3rd he started moving on me and by 4th had a car or so on me. We did another run just 2nd and through 3rd and we were even but you could tell the top of his gears he was pulling harder. His car had intake and muffler delete and mine just has drop in k&N. I was suspecting him to have the edge but it was a little bigger difference than I liked. Disappointing to say the least.
I have a video on YouTube not sure if it's allowed or not here.

The M45 and the G37 have nearly the same horsepower (325ish), but the newer Gs were definitely geared for harder accelerations especially over the older 5 speed M's like you have, and the G's weigh a good bit less than the M's do.

You didn't state if the G37S was the sedan or coupe, but still not really a fair comparison of apples to apples depending on what you were going against:

2013 G37 Sport: 3701 lbs (sedan) 4103 lbs (coupe) with 328-330 hp

2006 M45 Sport: 3995 lbs with 335 hp

The coupe might a more even match weight to hp wise, but the gearing is different on the G37, it's 5th gear ratio is 1.000:1 and the M45's is 0.834:1

I think I'd rather ride in style in my M45 and be a car length or more behind the G...lol (JMHO)

Thought I mentioned the Sedan guess not...I think the gearing and weight puts the M at too much disadvantage vs the G37. Not even sure if full exhaust and tune would be enough to match the G37.

Weight, gearing, and age... Depending on when your M was made it's pushing 10 yrs old vs a 2 yr old veh.
Don't be disappointed and know that you have a great ride!

I recently test drove a 2013 IPL G37 coupe 6 speed, all I can say is that I still love my 2006 M45S a lot more. The biggest reason for me is when I drove the G37 it felt like I was in the M45's little brother car (size wise) . I love driving cars w/ a manual, but the M45 fills that "bigger sport sedan" spot for me.

Did you do any testing off the line without rolling?

No we didn't but we may do that soon. I wanted to try from 20 mph at least but our track opened up here again recently so we may see how they compare in the 1/4

it's been awhile fellas!! hope all is good.... I've recently purchased a 2012 G37X 7spd auto (couldn't find a manual)... Although I had the 06 M35 - which was modded pretty good and drove it to approx 165K miles - I have to say the two cars are in different leagues (like Craig mentioned earlier - not an apples to apples comparison).

The gearing and stock HP with the G37 has already put an 'advantage' over the M, now if your buddy added an intake and muffler delete, he's got a bigger advantage. What I've learned already about the G37 motor is that 'intakes' or having more air getting to the engine REALLY helps the G37 overall. Now throw in the weight difference...

On the other hand, the interior space in the M is obviously a lot more than the G and the 'luxury comfort' is a league higher in the M. Just depends on what someone wants out of the two... Since I don't have to drive a lot of family members or clients around, I chose the G37X for it's sportiness, 7spd, mpg's, AWD handling for the EAST COAST Winters, subtle style...plus the price and mileage for it I couldn't pass up, finally the abundance of aftermarket parts/accessories compared to the M.

Prior to me leaving California for CT, I had a lot of mods done to the G37 so I wouldn't have to worry about finding a tuner, shop, etc over here. The modifications that I've already done to the car are:
Motordyne M370 (modified intake manifold)
aFe dry air filters
Stillen Grounding Kit
Increased exhaust piping size while keeping the stock mufflers
Cusco Upper Front Strut Bar
Uprev Tune
AWD dyno'd yielded good gains.

Prior to my mods, the stock G37X had great takeoff from the line and really picked up speed through the gears. The High Rev engine performs well in the upper rpms also. The ride was kind of 'boaty' in the turns, but still ok...I was having issues getting used to the stock ride feel since coming from a lowered M on wider tires. After the mods, my car is fast - yet comfortable. Adding the upper strut bar helped with the turns. Not sure if I'm going to lower the car yet - will need to get through the winter months.

I asked about the off the line testing because I feel unlike the M35 the M45's power is all at the bottom. I'm sure the G37 lighter weight and better gears would have all the advantage but at the same time I feel that the torq of the M45 would make up for the extra weight. I would love to see the difference off the line with a stock G37 vs stock M45.

I'm sure for those that have replace the rear gears and axles on the M45 for those of the G37 would have no problems off the line or 20mph rolling even if the G37 had some mods as listed above.

I've been thinking of replacing my rear gears & axles for some time now. Adding this mod with my exhaust, air filter & Uprev would really wake my M45 up.

^ Yes, the M45's torque down low would definitely have an up on the G37 off the line - would like to see both line up from a dig :)

Freddie, you should also think about the Transgo kit...a big plus for the 5spd transmission performance as well. and if you swap out your gears..... oooh weeee....! You'll get great launch off the line!!!!

CPJ now that I moved to a new area (St. Cloud FL.) it's somewhat hard to find a good shop for install, in fact I really haven't seen any import shops at all. I would do the rear swap 1st and than think about the trans kit. As I don't really push my car any more at all the days of 150+ mph look to be gone (too many cops and camera hanging everywhere).

What I think of all the time is how much quicker I can get off the line with the swap, it would go great with my 10.5 wheels and 285/30 tires :-) Don't mind me I'm always dreaming.

LOL...I hear ya!

I'm in a 'quiet' town of CT and there are a lot of 5-0 around here too....plus the roads are too small to really open up my car...I'm learning to chill when I drive

I like knowing I have my car set up as a 'sleeper'...stock rims, not lowered and clean (Moonlight white)... Hope you're doing well in FL....beautiful down there....
