it's been awhile fellas!! hope all is good.... I've recently purchased a 2012 G37X 7spd auto (couldn't find a manual)... Although I had the 06 M35 - which was modded pretty good and drove it to approx 165K miles - I have to say the two cars are in different leagues (like Craig mentioned earlier - not an apples to apples comparison).
The gearing and stock HP with the G37 has already put an 'advantage' over the M, now if your buddy added an intake and muffler delete, he's got a bigger advantage. What I've learned already about the G37 motor is that 'intakes' or having more air getting to the engine REALLY helps the G37 overall. Now throw in the weight difference...
On the other hand, the interior space in the M is obviously a lot more than the G and the 'luxury comfort' is a league higher in the M. Just depends on what someone wants out of the two... Since I don't have to drive a lot of family members or clients around, I chose the G37X for it's sportiness, 7spd, mpg's, AWD handling for the EAST COAST Winters, subtle style...plus the price and mileage for it I couldn't pass up, finally the abundance of aftermarket parts/accessories compared to the M.
Prior to me leaving California for CT, I had a lot of mods done to the G37 so I wouldn't have to worry about finding a tuner, shop, etc over here. The modifications that I've already done to the car are:
Motordyne M370 (modified intake manifold)
aFe dry air filters
Stillen Grounding Kit
Increased exhaust piping size while keeping the stock mufflers
Cusco Upper Front Strut Bar
Uprev Tune
AWD dyno'd yielded good gains.
Prior to my mods, the stock G37X had great takeoff from the line and really picked up speed through the gears. The High Rev engine performs well in the upper rpms also. The ride was kind of 'boaty' in the turns, but still ok...I was having issues getting used to the stock ride feel since coming from a lowered M on wider tires. After the mods, my car is fast - yet comfortable. Adding the upper strut bar helped with the turns. Not sure if I'm going to lower the car yet - will need to get through the winter months.
