I love my '06 M45, but I am annoyed with how inaccurate the fuel gauge is. The low fuel indicator comes on and Range indicator states **** when there is at least 5 gallons remaining in the tank. At 22mpg, it should be able to go another 110 miles. This was confirmed several times when I filled the tank shortly after the indicator illuminated and it only took 13-15 gallons. Is there any way to reconfigure the computer to know exactly how much gas is in the tank?

The fuel gauge has been a weak link in this line. The best back up is old fashion arithmetic. Reset the trip odometer at fill up. I use 15mpg so never to run out of fuel. I NEVER let it drop to 1/4 tank.

I have found my gauge to be fairly accurate so far. My light comes one when I'm down to about 30-40 miles left. I usually put 10 gallons in and expect to get 170-190 miles depending on roads.

What I want to know is how you are getting 22mpg?

A lot of the highways on which I commute are 55mph zones and traffic is always right at 55. I also have the nav screen set to the fuel economy section most of the time, so I am pretty conscious of my mileage.

On my old car I had to reset my trip odometer at every fill-up and monitor that because my fuel gauge did not work at all, so I didn't want to do that again. But I guess it's not a bad idea to fill up at 1/4 tank.

Are you sure you did filled up each time. The reason why I am saying this is: some Ms will shut off the fuel before the tank is full due to some design related issues. I would try to this next time:

1. Fill gas until it shut off2. Manually fill it again at slow speed (of gas volume) and see how much more it will take.

If it takes more than a gallon extra, there is your problem. I found it tricky because this happens more often at a specific angle - I had this happened to me once and I was able to duplicate it if I fill the tank from the same angle - when the nozzle tilt like 10-15 degrees toward the front of the car.

I will try that, but I think it has to be the gauge incorrectly measuring how much gas is in the tank (or just leaving a huge 5 gallon "reserve" after notifying the driver that the tank is near empty). This is because with the mileage I am getting I should be able to go over 400 miles and the low fuel indicator illuminates after only 300. I guess this is something I can live with because I am very happy with the car overall.

A lot of drivers of the 03, 04 models seem to have problems with the gas gauge. But not many new ones appear to have issues.

I have an 06 M35 and i had a gauge problem. Mine gauge would stop moving just below half tank, the miles to empty distance would also stop changing. I ran out of gas once because of it.

I ran mine down untill it said ***** to empty this weekend. The needle was at about 1/8 tank. Halfway between E and 1/4. I filled up and it took 17.5 gallons.

When yours says **** where is the needle pointing? It it below 1/4 but there is still as much as 7 gallons in the tank your float in the tank is malfunctioning. If you are still under warranty take it back to the dealer and have them check it. They replaced mine and it works perfectly now. Took me a little while to trust it, but it is correct now.

You may even want to really run it down to nearly empty and see if somehow that will reset the sensor.

my 04 M45 needs a new gas gage already( 1K dollar repair) has only 68,000 miles. This seems to be a problem with infiniti and they won't admit it is. M owners please make sure your warranty doesn't run out on you until you get this problem. Infiniti consumer affairs will not help out about this known problem. Please post on this blog if you are having problems to show how prevalent it is. Unfortunately Infiniti says that they don't consider internet forums a good source of information about the problems we're having. They are oblivious to our issues and I wouldn't buy another Infiniti ever again.
