I picked up my new M45 the week after Thanksgiving. My average gas mileage is 10.3mpg. I only know this because the car has an excellent computer that keeps track of this. My wife drives the car, and yes it is mostly just city type driving around town. About 1500 miles for the first month. But still this is way off from the posted numbers. Is this what most people are getting? I did a ski trip over the christmas holiday week which was all highway miles. For that trip I got only slightly better than 17.

Also, last week the car totally died. My wife called roadside assistance. They could not start the car and had to tow to the dealer. I had to reallypush for the dealer to give out a loaner. They first claimed they were all taken, but finally I got one. Anway, after 2 days they claimed the battery was dead??? We'll see.........

Other than this stuff I love this car.

That is a lot lower gas mileage than I would expect! Yes, there is a break-in period, after the mpg improves somewhat. Mostly city driving should still show about 15mpg at least ... that is what my wife gets driving around town (no highway at all) when she has our M45.

The dead battery is unusual ... that is way too early for it to go! Hopefully, that is the only thing wrong. Please keep us posted as to what else(?) they find out.

Hi,

Most of my driving is local roads and some limited highyway, and almost always I am averaging about 15mpg. I wish it was better, but thaty is what it is. The car is a M35, and I almost never "jump on it". Just sometimes.

I hope you never have that problem agin with the car dying on you. That's the worst feeling ever. Especially when it's your wife and not you. Especially, again when it's a new car that you just invested 50K+ in.

Man thats a shame about the battery...... thats also crap about the loaners, they will ALWAYS have plenty of G35s and I30/I35 on the lot!

at any rate...... city mileage is extremely subjective... Youll never see 17mpg in the city if you do little short trip deals, say less than 10 miles per startup..... MY Q gets about 12 or 13 doing that kind of stuff..... When you never get above about 50mph so the TC never locks up, gas mileage really decreases as the trans and engine are only operating together at 90% efficiency (torque converter slips by 10% when its not locked up)

Like I tell others, in our 6 cylinder SC grand prix, we didnt see 20mpg or over until 3000 miles or more... One thing you need to do, now that the car is "broken in" is drive the crap out fo it every so often..... Redline it a couple of times... That'll loosen it up.....

My first fill-up showed 15.8 mpg. I did go out and demo the 0-60 for some friends a few times. I was a bit shocked. My next two fill-ups have been 16.5 and 17.2. And that was driving to work and back (23 each way) on the Interstate. I'm starting to think I'll be amazed if I ever see a 23 mpg average. I would like a bit better mpg but I want to enjoy the car also.

I'm with you.

It's quite a disappointment when you come from a V6 SUV weighing 500 lbs into an V6 M35, and you downgrade on gas mileage.

My dealer tells me that once Spring rolls around, and the gas mixture changes, my 14.5 (!!!) will turn into 17-18. Still, that sucks.

But the car is great, and if you do the math, it's not that big of a difference each year in cost.

You're right, the diiference in cost for 15mpg vs. 17 mpg is about $198 a year.

10,000 miles per year/ 15 mpg = 667 gallons per year10,000 miles per year/ 17 mpg = 588 gallons per year

@ $2.50 per gallon = $1668 per year (15mpg)@ $2.50 per gallon = $1470 per year (17mpg)

...about 4 tankfulls on an M35/45 annually.

Absolutely right! Good analysis ...

For the same tiny financial reasons, I argue against putting anything less than 91 octane in the car.

Hey, i have an M35 Sport...i'm down in Miami and i do 100% City driving (i sit in traffic for about 3.5 hours a day...crazy huh?) I've been getting a solid 16.2MPG on my car, the highest i've gotten has been 18.7 when i went to the Keys (straight highway driving for about 3 hours). I always put premium (93) and some fuel enhancers. I think that 10.5MPG is very low!

Welcome to NICO!

Sounds like the car is just the right one for your in-car life! Wow, that is a lot of time in traffic each day!

Plus city mileage is very subjective to how hard you're nailing it on a regular basis, those wide open throttles will take their toll. I think you cannot ever expect this car to be a gas mizzer, they make Sentras and 4 banger Altima's for that, but it will improve. My 97' gets an average of 20mph when it is in the Bay Area (we only get 91 octane here) but when i take it down to LA I find it goes down to 16-17 with all the stop and go.
