Just wanted to let everyone know that i repair the dreaded M45 cluster problem with the fuel gauge.
The cost is $299 plus shipping. If you want it quick you can overnight it to me and i will overnight it back.
I take paypal and i can make a ebay listing for you if it would make it more comfortable. I really recomend replacing the fuel sender at the same time just to keep from issues.

out of curiosity, what exactly is it that goes wrong inside the gauge to cause it to stay on full and send the check engine light message?

not a confirmed fix but worked for me
remove cluster
on the back panel on the big plug buttom row, right in a middle pin 30 and pin 31 resolder them

are the pins numbered?

Are you getting a code for the fuel sending unit (P0462)?
