Has anyone swapped out their M37 Headlights for an aftermarket Headlight?
Did you by chance have AFS?
I have done so and had nothing but problems. I had to revert back to the OEM Headlights.
Curious if anyone has been successful.
Anyone bought OEM Headlights? If so, where and at what price? The lowest I can find for new OEM
Headlights with AFS is approximately $1,050.00. I want to replace both but this is serious cash.
I may have to just replace the Passenger SIde Headlight due to cost.

Thanks,

M37S Joe

What do you mean by aftermarket headlight? Like a retrofit or a whole assembly from some factory? I know retrofits should work just as OEM, but if you got a knock off headlight from a chinese factory, I'm not surprised to hear it had issues.

The entire headlight assembly minus the HID / Zenon Ballast and Lamp (which is reused). The reason I ask is that there are tons of sellers of this product. I have seen at least two versions. I was hoping someone else had tried these and was curious of the results.

AFS is a "feedback" system using a 2-axis sensor to detect headlight position. On powerup it runs the actuators to the stops as a self-test, making it pretty much impossible to fool the AFS Controller with static hardware in order to use a non-AFS lamp. The controller is also a CAN device, so you can't eliminate it without tripping a bunch of communication codes. So there are really just two ways to go non-AFS, either disassemble the old headlights and retain the actuators, or open up the cluster and paint out the AFS lamp. You also can't just throw a new AFS headlight at it, the system needs a levelizer calibration in order to work right. If you have problems with a replacement unit (OE or aftermarket), that may be the reason.

Interesting. I wonder why sometimes the AFS Lamp Flashes on Start, sometimes it doesn't.

Parts Technik has sent me a Return Label for the Passenger Side Headlight. This is progress. Now will they refund my $$$ or just keep the headlight and my $$$? I have a backup plan. I used a credit card for purchase as eBay and Paypal are not reliable. I have initiated a return for the Driver side Headlight. Today it will be removed and I will install the OEM Headlight. it will be interesting to see if the AFS Flashing Fault indicator stays off (like before I started this project). It should. I never had any issues other than the Headlight Lens are 13 years old and show normal wear. The Parts Technik brand of Headlights is KARPAL.

If they don't refund you and keep the light then just do a charge back as 'goods or service not rendered' through your credit card company. The CC will investigate and either make them refund or send you back the item you paid for. They'll likely credit you the money in the meantime while they investigate.
