My 2012 M37 stopped blowing AC from the vents on both sides of the steering wheel. The cold air blows at the drivers feet instead. Some air is blowing to the windshield. I have tried changing all of the settings to configure the air flow differently for both driver and passenger side. Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

The Mode Actuator for your driver side isn't working, most likely it's a bad actuator. It's on the left side of the HVAC Unit, but unfortunately, the FSM says the whole HVAC Unit has to come out to replace it. I assume that's because there are brackets or hardware on the steering crossmember which prevent getting at it. See HAC-198 here:

The entire HVAC unit has to be removed? I wonder if there is some easier way to get to it? Seems like a big job for just a small part.

I've never done one, I can only tell you what the manual says. The under-dash area on M's is packed, so as I said earlier, I'd presume something immovable is in the way like part of the steering crossmember. It may be possible to get at it by cutting and re-welding if that's the case, but the FSM wouldn't be calling for removal if it was anything simple.

I'm in the same boat. I've purchased the actuator online. But i might have to bring it to a mechanic if it will be harder to install than I thought. Based on the Q50 models it's supposed to be right beside the gas pedal. But I can't find the exact location for the M.

Mo1290-- could you tell me the part number for this actuator? How did you determine the correct part number?

Hey characterhighest, so I can went to the mechanic and I have to change both driver and passenger side actuators. I ordered them on rockauto and purchased the four seasons model. On rockauto they give you a full description. The left side number was 73313 and the right side was 73305. I’m getting the right side today. So I should get it installed within the week.
