I'm thinking the M35x is going to be the eventual replacement for my I30, so I was hoping some owners could comment on their cars' fuel economy. I get about 23 city/28 highway out of my I30. How does the M35x compare?

The car has two major faults, and they are sort of related. Lack of a 6th gear, and poor fuel economy. I average around 13/18. Otherwise a perfect score in most every other department

The entire current Infiniti line are thirsty cars including the M. Infiniti apparently is not all that concerned as they keep introducing newer models that still love to drink gasoline. A sixth gear won't hurt, but unless they revamp some of their engine designs, even the 6th gear won't be able to tweak much more than an additional 2 or 3 mpg.

That's enough to make me look at a Lexus GS...there's no way the M35 is so much heavier than the I30/35 that it gives it fuel economy of around 10mpg less than the I. And the I30 has a 4-speed automatic. So why the FWD VQ gets so much better fuel economy is beyond me. Something needs to change with the M.

I get around 16-17 in City, 18-21 combined, 23+ on HW in my M35 Sportsand have been very satisfied. I drove the GS as well when I bought my M and I made my decision not on the MPG, I wont be richer by saving 25$ per month great car, very comfortable and roomy ... I am waiting for a new version with a 6th gear and may be a new look, until then I am fine ...FYI *** I usually drive on cruise around 70 mph.

I am averaging around 18-19 in a 60/40 City/Highway mix, and I have been trying to use the cruise as well, typically between 70-75. Could the mpg be better? Absolutely. Is 3-4 mpg better a deal killer? I don't think so, and this is coming from someone who was getting 30+ mpg in a 2004 VW Passat TDI immediately prior to getting my 2007 M35.

MattB,

Beware of the GS. If you sit in a GS, the seat is not nearly as comfortable as an M. Lexus then put mirror controls and other adjustments in the dash to the left of the steering wheel in a HIDDEN pop-out door!! A really dumb idea. I like to have as many controls as I can within easy reach and without having to hunt for them. The trunk opening is also REALLY tight.

I was turned off quickly because of these reasons.

Stick with an Infiniti.

I got a loaner GS once, standard and the seats where really not that impressive, but next time i got the loaner with leather seats and that was different, but surely you cannot compare the G with M, M is their flagship product.

It strikes me that Infiniti should adapt the hybrid hardware they use in the Altima Hybrid to the M35x and kill the GS450h. I like the idea of greater fuel economy and greater power but the GS hybrid has two things that really kill it for me: CVT and no tachometer. It's also way out of my affordable range for now. An Infiniti M35x hybrid that was more performance oriented could be great.
