Sooooo I almost water locked my car recently... pretty scary stuff. I went through a mean puddle and I was then jerking around for a few hours. I could not accelerate past 25mph either. So now I want out of the CAI game! Since the unit is two pieces, would I be able to just use the first piece of pipe and have the filter safely mounted in the top portion of my engine bay? Does anyone know of a heat shield I could use? Also, just bought a replacement filter off Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NF ... UTF8&psc=1); is there a better filter I should consider using that works with the Injen piping?

We got rained pretty hard for couple days back December, I got scared and bought a Injen Hydro Shield to cover the filter from water getting into.
We have been in a drought since then, no a single drop of rain in Cali.
I notice better gas mileage with the CAI instead of Short Ram but yea if anybody could make a heat shield that would be great!

I also emailed Injen and got this semi-douchey response: There is a warning on the pipe stating you should remove the lower section during bad weather conditions. You are able to actually make the unit into a short ram during these bad weather days. Also, you are very lucky your vehicle didn’t hydro lock and ruin your motor. We do not sell a heatshield for that application. So yeah I guess the short ram is all good...

Thanks Bryan, from now on I will always read my intake pipe :slap:

Well I removed the second piece of the intake and put on my new filter with a water screen. MPG is back to normal! Anyone think I need a heat shield? I was also thinking about trimming the second piece of the pipe half way so that it sticks down in that crevice partially?

I just installed one as well....I went with the polished finish (to match my polished plenum and throttle body  )

maybe you shouldn't trim the longer piece...better resale value... :bigthumb:

I just installed this same Intake on my M35x and loving it. You had water go into the pipe even in that wheel well? With that guard underneath the engine, I thought it would somewhat protect from that much water splashing up into the engine compartment.

anything to cut down your intake pulling in hot air should theoretically help...
i know a member checked underhood temperatures, although i think it was an M45, that were pretty darn hot.

you'll probably have to custom fab a piece out of aluminum. but if you google diy heat shield for cold air intake, you can find some pretty good instructions. you'll need to mock one up with cardboard and then transfer the pattern to the aluminum, cover it with heat resistant paint, etc.

I covered my R2C shield with self-sticking heat resistant/metallic tape, along with my intake tube as well. It doesn't look to glamorous, but no one can see it. I think Dean did the same with his Injen intake pipe as well.

I did end up sucking water in on a flooded road, luckily she is still running strong (this was a year or so ago). I am going to play with the shield idea soon, weather has been fine lately but once summer hits I'm in trouble!

I remember I fabricated up a true cold air intake for my old Armada. I bought a small intercooler, placed in the front of the motor with a filter on the other side, and piping straight to TB, which was wrapped in aluminum to keep temps down. It worked well bought my temps down by 15-20 degrees. You can always fabricate something just have to search and use some of your own ideas.

That's crazy that they gave that advise. But it might be something to consider I guess. (God forbid engine damage)
