So, at high speeds at around 60+ my wheel starts to shake a little. A shop said it was because my rims were slightly bent (had the car a while, theres curb rash on the front rims). My car is a m35s (RWD), A place is pricing me around $135 to refinish each rim. I need to get all four re-done but I don't have the money for all 4 just yet. My main concern is the wheel shaking, so my question is: what are the odds that my back rims are causing my wheel to shake on a RWD car? My front ones are going to get fixed first, but i'm afraid that i'm going to get them fixed and the problem won't go away.

Even if the back rim was bent, and the front rims weren't. What are the odds that i'd still get a wheel shake from my rear tires? Also if it isn't my rims, what else could it be? It happens slightly when I brake also, but I think that is because of high speeds. If it was my front brakes (which i got them changed last year), then it should only be happening when I brake, correct?

Thanks

i have the same problem.. dealer said it was warped rotors, ive had them replaced and cut a few times when i go in for oil and rotations.. our cars are prone to that.. it helped with the shaking or vibrating if you will.. but starting at about 70mph i still have a vibration/shake in the wheel which gets worse as the speed increases obviously.. i had the rims checked but they said they werent bent. i have been trying to figure out how to fix this for the better part of a year now and i am about to take the plunge and get new struts, springs, and sway bushings considering the ride quality has gotten much more bumpy and there has been more body roll.. hopefully that somehow helps with the wheel vibrations as well.. if not maybe i do need new wheels.. especially with this recent New Jersey weather my cars taken a beating

My back rim was for sure bent because I had a flat on it from a pothole. I got that fixed tho, but yeah this shimmy only started happening after this winter (nyc here), so my car took quite a beating as well. The front rims look the same as they did last year, but maybe it is bent.. i'm not sure. Now i'm torn between bringing it to the rim reaper shop, or the dealer and dumping out $120 for them to look at it, and if it is the rims they will just keep my money ;\. I might just get a tire rotation soon and see if the problem still happens, then its my rim that's bent. My tires are 19's tho since I have the sport model. Maybe those a prone to be bent more from the recent NY streets.

try rotating the bent wheels to the front and see if they still shake, since you have a RWD, you maybe able to tell the difference, but then also rotors that are warped can be the caused as well, after i replaced the rotors on my ride there was less shaking/vibration. I also have bent wheels but they might not be that bad compared to yours, so i can't tell you much there

Go to your local shop and ask for wheel balancing.

I went to pep boys (i know, mistake) and they said it doesn't need balancing and that my rims were bent.. he also then said that balancing would only reduce it, but won't make it go away completely. As far as rotationg the back wheels to the front. Previously one of the back wheels was bent, and i'm afraid when I rotate them, that the problem will still happen.. but I think that is what i'm going to try tomorrow.

bluntey, et al,

If you know your rims are bent, then concentrate on one issue at a time. I would recommend you fix the two rims in the worse shape first and then put these back on the front.

From your post I don't think you have the full size spare, so fixing two and swapping in the spare is probably not an option.

Other issue to look at -

Be wary as Nissans/Infinitis are notorious for the bearings going out. I replaced all 4 x on my wife's FX AWD and the two rear ones on my 2006 M45 Sport. Bearings are easy to replace and run ~ $700 for all four. The front come as a single unit - Hub + bearings while the back come in two piece so you will have to pay a machine shop to press the two together if you do not have a ten ton press in your garage. This is a pretty simple job so if you can change brake pads and rotors you can change the hubs and bearing out too. Just watch the front ABS sensors in the bearing housing - I didn't, so this cost another $129 per sensor plus over night freight from California as I was due back in AFG in 4 days time and could not leave the wife with an InOp FX.

Make sure your tires are not splitting, separating, excessively worn or worn unevenly - this too will cause vibration and steering issues at speed.

Front end alignment -whens the last time this was done? Did you bend and tie rods when you hit the super gulp pot hole?
And since you have the Sport model, when is the last time all four wheels were aligned? And not by Pep boys or Wal-Mart?

Brakes - okay if they are really, really warped they can cause the car to vibrate at speed with no brake pressure applied. Usually a car with warped rotors will only vibrate under braking. I do not believe in turning brake rotors on new cars and never just change out the rotors or brake pads separately - they will not seat correctly and you will crash and burn. EBC slotted/dimpled rotors and yellow stuff for all 4 axles was ~$550 for my M45 - so much better than stock.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Truckie,
Perhaps more pics of your M45 will be nice. Don't remember seeing pics of it. Also pics of the GTR.

TXT,

Will try to post some pics this coming weekend. Have on last class Tuesday with final paper due. Both cars are dirty from the weather, but the M45 is still factory clean inside, outside, and underneath. Hate to keep it outside but MNSTR 0 is in on space and my nice PL-320 is in the other. Just need a bigger garage.

I have had the M45 since day one, 05 July 2005. Still comfortable, still fast, and still cannot find a worthy replacement.

I see you have the aero package and a nice forward rake - much better looking than the stock stance.

I need to replace my front bearings on my 2006 AWD M35. I'm looking at the Timken brand on Rock auto's site. Any advice?

I ended up going with OEM Infiniti Hubs. My problem with the aftermarkets is that while a few stated Timken bearings, I had no knowledge of the hub assembly quality. It's not a job you want to revisit anytime soon after the install, so for the few dollars more the OEM's cost, I just went with them for the peace of mind.
I am sure many folks have installed aftermarket hubs/bearings with no problems.
That being said, In my opinion, RockAuto is an A+ quality supplier, they have never let me down!
