Took my car to dealer to replace shiny shifter because old one was pealing but new one does not match trim. It looks totally different from old one but the dealer told me that the new one is the correct OEM one. The new one is pretty dull and does not match trim. My question is what is the shifter supposed to look like? Pictures would be the best since the dealer reports that the one I have is OEM and original to the car but it looks drab and not shiny as the old one. New one looks out of place. :gotme

The dealer is telling you the truth, the OEM one is not chrome. I think it is a very poor imitation since it doesn't match anything else in the car. This is true at least for the 06 (I mention this because you have an 08). Presumably you bought your car used and the previous owner didn't like that and used chrome spray paint on it.

Thanks. I have checked ebay and the internet and noticed some were brushed and other smooth chrome (looking). Do you think there are two types out there?

The link I posted was for a 2006, go back a page or two and look at the pictures the OP had (my first post in the thread was a comment on the bezel). Would you call that brushed? I'm guessing not, but dunno. It's definitely hardly chrome looking if you ask me, but I don't think it's brushed, and maybe it's what you had (I think brushed aluminum would look better).

That is what I thought. I looked at a M35S with the metal trim and the bezel is dull to match the trim where as the dark wood trim (kind of orange) is much shinier.

My 06 had an aluminum look (blurry shine) when new, definitely not chrome (sharp shine) or brushed.
