Hello all,

I have a 2008 M45 that does not have the Navigation or Technology package. I have looked into adding in the factory options to the car but as many have already said it would be very expensive and Infiniti had no desire to pull apart my dash and the wiring harnesses to try to add these factory features in aftermarket.

I then went the route of looking at a double din navigation unit but it will not fit behind the stock display screen as there is no room there and there is no dash kit to replace the 6 CD changer and mount it anywhere useful. I then decided to go the carputer route but given the features I am looking for this would also be a bit old school and unnecessarily complex.

I have now decided that the easiest and most sensible route is to integrate a tablet for all of my needed features. It can serve to play all of my media and it comes with it's own display so I don't need to patch into the cars existing display system. When tethered to my cell phone for internet access it would make an awesome GPS system, media player and allow streaming through Pandora. I could also make use of any android app that I can download.

My issue is this:

I want to turn the car into a bluetooth headset to be detected by a tablet. There are aftermarket devices that I have found that will act as a bluetooth headset and then connect to a set of RCA audio connectors. At the very least I want to take this output and patch it into the cars audio. Additionally I would also like to patch it into the cars microphone to be able to interact with the tablet through the cars audio system separately from the normal voice functions. Since I will be using the tablet for GPS, likely google maps, I need the tablet audio to preempt the normal car audio ONLY when the tablet sends audio output.

What this would result in is when I use the tablet for playing media it will preempt all other audio. Fortunately Google Maps for GPS automatically preempts any other audio on the tablet. Sooooo the car would operate as expected under normal conditions but when the tablet is sending audio whether it be from played media or the gps it would take over and preempt the normal audio.

Some of you may of course realize that using a bluetooth receiver that puts out RCA audio connected to an aux input somewhere would be a very simple way to get most but not all of the functionality that I want. The problem this causes is that if I want to use Google Maps for GPS I can't listen to one of the cars normal audio outputs like the CD player, radio or stored music. This is why I am looking for a solution to have the tablet audio preempt all other audio sources so that I could listen to say the radio and hear turn by turn GPS commands only when the tablet has something to say.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

How incredibly unhelpful. Hopefully you are not representative of the entire community.

Sooo...anyone ELSE have any ideas? Hopefully there is some sort of aftermarket gadget I can get to do what I want. There are similar devices for video which allow you to install a rear camera and a video source that works while driving. These devices get installed in line and replace the regular video display with their own when their is a signal.

A similar device but for audio is what I am looking for. I'm just getting started. I'm not sure if these cars have an amp that is external to the stereo but if it does I could intercept that audio signal after the stereo using a device with the functionality I described that would replace the stereo's audio signal with the output of the tablet.

Ok I have found a device that is similar to what I need and may even be able to modify this unit to work off of the cars power. It is for a motor cycle application but could be made to work.

Does anyone know if the amp is built into the stereo unit or is it a separate piece of equipment. To make this work I need to put a similar device inline and intercept the audio signal sometime before it is amplified. A device like the one above would allow the tablet audio to preempt the normal car audio signal.

Thanks for looking for me. This guy basically has the setup that is the "easy" way to do it. As you can tell from the video he is not playing the radio or a CD. Basically he is listening to nothing while the iPad/Aux input is being used. This would make for some VERY boring long trips. Yes he could play any media on the iPad which would at least be something but he would not be able to play CDs, the radio, XM, etc.

Again my goal is to insert something in line that would preempt the normal CD/radio audio signal and replace it with the GPS turn by turn instructions only when a directions are being given.

To that goal I'm still not sure if my car as an external amp or if it is integrated with the stereo. If there is actually a separate amp I could splice into the line level signal with the motorcycle helmet communication system that allows radar detectors and cell phone audio to preempt normal music play.

Google m35 sub and it should give you the location of the amp in the trunk but I am not sure if the bose stereo system would affect where it is and what package urs is. I think a line out converter will help your rca issue.

The amplifier in the back DOES have its own set of inputs that come in from the stereo upfront. Just fine the correct wires for the two respective L and R channels and splice in with a set of RCAs directly. You don't need any special gizmos to interface with it, because the signal is analog. The only thing is, the sound from the radio wouldn't automatically be lowered when your navigation device will output sound, but that's easy.. just keep the volume on that turned up a bit more than the stereo in the car.
