M30 won't start, Shifter problem?

My girlfriend's M30 convertible with the 4 speed automatic has developed a new problem that has me stuck. The shifter won't come out of park, which I don't think it is supposed to unless it is running and the brake pedal is depressed. When the key is turned the lights all come on and the fuel pump buzzes, but the care won't turn over. The battery is charged. Is there some kind of safety switch that tells the ecu that it is in park and safe to start? I can't find any blown fuses or obviously broken parts.
