I bought an 1990 coupe with 100k on the odometer. Right now the speedo doesn't work (or the odometer) and ther is a sound behind the dash that is like a "whirr whirr whirr" and varies with speed. It sounds like the mechanical speedo cables used to in Ford vehicles.Does this car have a mechanical or electronic speedometer? Does anyone know what the proble might be, and how I could solve it? I was thinking of replacing the gauge cluster but since the odo isn't working too I was thinking it would be either the sending unit if electronic or the cable if mechanical.

The engine is missing or something one one cyl, makes it idle a little rough and under part throttle acceleration you can tell from the exhaust note. Interestingly, at mid to full throttle its much less noticeable. I haven't check the dist. cap, rotor, or plugs yet though.

Finally I read a TSB on the M30 about the injectors leaking. My car reeks of fuel and I suspect this is the problem, as the intake manifolds look damp on either side of the engine. The seal kits are 24 for 6 at O'Rielys but does anyone have any suggestions for getting to these injectors on the vg30E engine? They are buried down in there and those phillips head screws are really tough to get out, and so soft that I'm afraid to round them off.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi Andrave,

I have had both your problems with my M30. The speedo cable is mechanical and broken. The noise is the cable spinning against the broken shaft near the cluster. As I remember the cable was about $40 at the dealer. I spent about two hours installing it.

There is a saftey recall on all M30 for leaking fuel injectors. The dealer will replace the injectors and related hoses at no cost. I had mine done a couple years back. Interesting, I called Infinity corporate they told me the recall had expired. They also said don"t drive the car it may cause a fire. Saftey recalls never expire my mechanic said.

My NAPA mechanic found the saftey recall and called the local dealer. They said bring the car over we will fix it for free, go figure. I sent my NAPA mechanic a case of good beer, he talked himself out of a $1000 job, nice guy.

Good luck with your M30

yeah I have to ask about the speedo cable too... right now its not that big of a deal but I'd like to fix it eventually. I got this car cheap because of its problems, but so far they have been very inexpensive to repair. a 100 dollar brand new 110 amp alt. cured all the electrical problems, the leaking fuel system will be replaced for free, the speedo is a 40 dollar fix... there are a few dings that wouldn't be bad to fix.. and then if I could get the seats re upholtered this would be good as new.
