Just bought my '92 M30 Convertible... 87,000 miles, great condition. Question about the Active Speaker stereo-- can i replace the head unit and speakers with factory equivalent Bose? Or either/or? The head unit is acting up a little, sometimes no sound. Also have a Sony CD player in the dash--is this original? It works with the radio. The rear speakers are blown I think, anyone know how to get 'em out?

Don't want to go aftermarket 'cause i like the use of upper control pod.

Was the Bose system an option on the convertible? And someone asked why no auto a/c on the convertible...i'm guessing getting an acurate temp read in the cabin would be tough, right?

Just pulled the HU (cassette player was not functional) and it turn out to be a clarion head unit.

There are 2 different harnesses you can buy.

One for a BOSE setup (which has female RCAs for the speakers and 1 12+v wire for the illumination)

The other harness is for most 87-92 Nissan. (2 illumination wires and an extra ground wire that has to be tied with the other)

I'm trying to retain the pod controls as well.

I purchased a PAC Swi-RC and a pioneer doubleDin HU. (no phone hookup being that it's a convertible m30 phone calls would be pointless to begin with due to the wind.)

For the original Clarion Unit I opened it up and removed the female end for the pod controls from the Board on the radio. I did this because there's is not enough slack so I'm going to add extra wire to the female end and make it a harness.

The other problem I've run into is that PAC had never tested their steering wheel control module on the M30. So this is now a game of trial and error. The harness extender will prove useful in this case.

Any input on successfully getting the pod to work with out soldering the head unit

update:

I just attempted to change the speakers and realize that the active Clarion system works the same way as the BOSE.

I'm trying to figure out the right way and most likely I'm going to end up bypassing the amps to the only connected to the head unit.

now the only thing left is to find the amps

any clues to the rear and the front amp location

Whats up man, I literally just got done doing all of this earlier today.

Good news is ur speakers are probably good, bad news is its annoying to bypass the amps.

For the rears the amps are attached to the bottom of the speaker. Remove the 4 screws holding it to the back cover and unplug it.

Unscrew the bottom plastic cover (4 screws with 1/4 heads). Now what I did was cut the purpe and yellow wires coming from the speaker side of the plug. I then ran them directly to the speaker itself. Its the same on both sides.

The fronts are annoying but you end up doing the same process, even same color wires.
Remove the door panels, then the big a** speaker boxes. Once again you need to remove the 1/4 hex screws and there are about 14 per side. Same thing, just go directly to the speakers and you should be fine.

** just remember to unplug the white connector to each amp and leave it disconnected

The foam was shot on all 4 speakers.

I have a vert, is the location of the amps different than the coupe.

I was able to find the Rear Amps, but the rear seat has to come out. This is proving to be a daunting task as I am not small enough to climb into the trunk. I will need an extension socket and some patience.

Dirtym30: you were able to jump and bypass the wires. Did you use an inline connector?

Ya man. I disconnected the amp but wanted to keep the factory look so I just took the purple an yellow wires and went straight to the speakers. I used heat shrink but connectors

I got the speakers rewired and a 1000w amp in the trunk fits nicely behind the spare tire w/ a pioneer double din.

Sweeeet, I love these stock speakers. They sound great with just a head unit
