"M" when Overdrive Off button is depressed

I have a 2014 Frontier 4x4--recently purchased. (Automatic) Whenever I depress the "overdrive Off" button on the gear shift, the letter "M" appears under the gear selected. What does that mean? once I put Overdrive back in play, the M goes away. Thanks
