Kendahl:

I had a friend with an RX-7 and it only leaked oil from the transmission after 100,000 miles---but my friend didn't drive his car much, anyway. Thats was the first time I saw a gasoline car use glow plugs for starting. I thought that was interesting.

I think even toyota needs to go back to using the motors of the 80's... most of them are still on the road and running strong!

yeah that would be in perfect world but with the new fed standards where they will have to get in excess of 30-35 MPG. Its just not possible to use engines with such wide tolerances.

Oh I am not saying S* about it I have not even been a member for a month yet. I can hopefully help out with something as long as it doesn't involve legal matters or propriatary information. I enjoy researching car issues and have way too much free time on my hands.

Aww shucks. Well thank you.

Prior to finding NICO I spent some time reading the competitions crap, I was less than impressed with the people there. Here the people have a general wanting to know about there vehicle and have intelligent conversations about it. It's the best thing I have found on the interent. Plus it keeps me from boring my wirfe to tears with car stories.

My wife says I'm obsessed with NICO lol.

I'm going to address quite a few posts here, so please keep up...

First regarding comparing the oil filter efficiency. The problem is that whether it be cotton, paper, or synthetic fiber, all of them are going to hold varying amounts of oil IN ADDITION to the filtered particulates.

With that being said, it would be better to use the same filter with different oils to see which oils caused more garbage to accumulate in the filter.

Another option, though still not quite scientific, would be to "wet" the filters prior to weighing them. If the filter medium is soaked with oil, then drained, the weight should give a moderately good baseline.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the comment regarding an oil that lasts 21k. Check out Amsoil. They have a couple that they say can last upwards of 35k miles. I'm still not sure if you have to change the filters during that time or not, but they also have multi-filter systems as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve,

Like G_Whizz (Sean) said, you're very valued here on the forums. If I could buy you a G, I would, then you'd have a toy to experiment on lol.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacko,

Just a little food for thought. My I30 is up past 280k miles right now with the original engine and transmission. It is on it's 4th owner. I'm not sure how the first owner (86kmiles) took care of it, but my mother who owned it up until 200k miles went to jiffy lube and wasn't always good about the intervals. I got the car when I was 19 and treated it like my very own race car. A few times I let the oil go past the oil's recommended life 5k-6k, then I started using the Mobile Clean 5000 and Clean 7500 and would frequently drive until the 5k or 7.5k marks on it.

At around 250k, I switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic and started using expensive filters. I found that the Mobil 1 got dirtier faster than the Clean 5000 or Clean 7500. I think this is due in part to the Synthetic's cleaning abilities. For the next 30k miles I used Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 EP. My oil always got dark within 2k miles and I didn't see any benefit from using the Mobil Filters or the K&N filter.

It's possible that the engine was just dirty inside, but I have a hard time believing that the synthetic wouldn't have cleaned it all out after 30k miles. I actually changed the Mobil 1 EP at 7500 miles because it looked so dirty.

As for your timing chain being original...They are supposed to last the life of the engine. Once your G is past warranty, I'd start considering an EP synthetic like Amsoil or Motul.

Thats a great idea I was thinking about thatwhile sitting in bed l;ast night and forgot about it this morning. Thats how you prime a diesel filter. So maybe a more acurate way to do it would be fill the new filter with new oil and the old with oil thats draining. Whatever I have three to do and I will will figure something out.

My thoughts on oil lasting 30+K is that almost all engine use/burn/leak small amounts over time. That would take most drivers well over a year or two between oil changes. Does the oil actually retain its cleaning anti sludging capabilities for two+ years?

I fear that my NICO addiction is getting worse seeing as how I now keep it open at the computer in my bay at work. I think I need to see someone about this.

Hey Steve... that's called NICOtine!! We all suffer from it!

Ok, so if you would like and have time. It would be great to see an article on a clutch job. Even better if you are able to take pics with it!!

Whatever you can do is appreciated by all!

Check out their website. It's a very high quality synthetic. They design it with extended change intervals in mind.

I keep NICO open at work too. So don't feel too bad. The "Recent Topics" link is my friend.

Nate:

Asking me to change my oil at 5K miles is like trying to teach an old dog new tricks . For example, can anyone teach "Telcoman" to use Premium fuel in his G? Never!

My soul and mind is sold on 3k miles. I hear the value of what you have said, but only God can unwire my mind from changing my oil at 3K miles.

You know that the I-30 is a much more superior quality car to the sentra, and so your car is more beefed up than the sentra. Sentra, at that time was not a car designed with the reliability of an I-30. What I am saying here is that despite those conditions, i have been able to make the sentra work for me for 15 years. I have seen many sentras with ruined timing chains even before they reached 150K miles. Nonetheless, for a Sentra, 250K is not bad.

I have started taking pics of a clutch job in progress. When I finish should I send it to be proofed by a moderator? I will try to give easy to fallow but thorough directions.

It's your choice Jacko. I'm just trying to shed some light on your situation.

One of the big movements that's happening right now is moving away from the concept of just "recycling" and encorporating it into "sustainability".

Regardless of the money saved, I'd hate to throw away oil that still have completely useful life.

I agree that the VQ in the I30 is better engineered than the engine in your sentra. I just wanted to inform you.

All right then I will have that up soon. I will post the how to first followed by pics. I find it hard to keep the thought process going while reading some of these posts with large pics. There are many things that I need to explain with this task.

That's new to me. Mine was a first generation car with the 13B, fuel injected engine. At one time, they had a small reservoir of antifreeze which was squirted into the combustion chamber at start up. My car had a dual ignition system with two spark plugs per rotor. I don't know anything about the carburetted engines or the later models.

The car was tough. Although I drove it hard, it still had the original engine with good oil pressure, transmission and clutch after 190k miles. I expected transmission problems after the bearings got noisy at 85k miles, but it just kept going.
