Hey folks... long time stalker here.

Wanted to tell you of the horrors of replacing the alternator on the 90 q45 after 20 years and 168,000 miles. I believe the alternator is the original, and nothing in the service manual anywhere mentions brackets holding the alternator in place from the rear of the alternator. Had to rip the thing off, to gain access. A 2 hour job quickly turned into a 6 hour nightmare. Plus it does not mention how to somehow hold onto a nut for the mounting bolt when there is no way to get your hand behind the alternator. Super glue to the rescue!

Here are some pics of the original (?) alternator:

:welcome: to NICO! Congrats on getting it swapped out - it's a real pain. From what I hear many shops drop the a/c compressor (without disconnecting the flex lines) to get to it more easily. The super glue trick is a good one too.

Thanks for the welcome. I accidentally transposed the numbers, the car actually has 186k miles on it, not 168k.

I tried to move the compressor from other members postings, but I removed the two bottom bracket bolts, but could not find the other bolts to remove it. It is really dirty under there. Need a hazmat suit, two gallons of simple green, three nylon brushes, and a pressure washer to remove the years of neglect it has had from previous owners.

I bought oem replacement. What kind of lurker would I be, if I did not actually practice the advice that I see on here from many of the gurus? I DO NOT want to tackle that again. When I changed the injectors a few weeks ago, the plenum removal was done in under 1.5 hours, so I thought this would be a breeze. Friday the 13th kicked my butt hard! :gapteeth:
