Yeah most nissan R200 VLSD's can be swapped. US 240sx VLSD are not too common, so you might as well go with either NA Z32/J30 or a silvia rear dif.

Personally i think, if you have the money, its good to go with a good aftermarket LSD. Helical gear LSD's and maybe 1.5 way clutch differentials are good for autocross. A 2 way clutch differential is prime for drag and drift applications.

So really it depends on what your goal are for your car and how much your willing to spend.

J-Spec i really like road racing like hauling *** around curves and break loose some but still power through curves with ease ya know... but i also take alot of trips to the drag strip.... money is a little slim right now do to just finishing the swap.. so say if i were to find a wreck n/a z32 what exactly off of it do i need to make it work... will it bolt right up? any modification do i use my axles .. i really just never studied up on this part of the car... do u know of anywhere that has a z32 rear end? thanksChris

Since your on a budget, VLSD is the way to go (aftermarket LSD's cost $900+, and welding your differential will make your turning SUCK)

Here is a write up on the Infiniti J30 VLSD install (same differential as the NA Z32)

enjoy :)

J-Spec did a good job of summing things up. If you're on a budget, go with the vLSD. For the kind of driving you want to do, you'd ideally want a helical LSD (Quaiffe).

I have tried 3 nissan rear ends, the stock open diff.(2.35 shorts on Falken ze-512 @28 psi), the j30 rear (2.09 same tire info) and the NA 300zx rear(2.17 same tire info) i really like the j30 unit for its longer gears the car real feels more powerful and can strech it's legs over my buddy's 8k+ rpm civic when we run similar times and mph. The z rear makes for a busy drive with all the extra shifting and makes finding the right gear in a corner clutch abuse.

Using the Z diff should be no different than using the stock 240 diff since they are the same ratio.

For grip driving like carvig turns and ish you want a helical/mechanical differential. Your options are Quaife and S15 differentials. They both utiliza a helical design meaning it has many gears inside that only actuate when power needs to go to both sides. Viscous LSDs or VLSDs are pretty good for all around. When friction inside the differential heats a 'goo' both wheels lock together. These are the cheapest, but usually the least reliable as many of them are OLD.CLutch style differentials are the most expensive usually, and you can get them from companies like Kaaz, ATS, and cusco. They have clutches inside of the diff that lock together and lock both wheels together. They are used most for drift and I don't think they are 'great' for grip driving. they are way better then open diffs though

You have mad options....it all depends on price thoughvlsd's are about 300helical s15 = 350ishquaife helical =800ishclutch style = 800+

hope that helped:)

The least expensive price that I have seen a for a new Quiaffe is $1200. I've looked for used ones a few times, and no one is selling them. It seems you either buy them brand new, or you buy a broken one, replace all the parts with brand new parts yourself, and pay almost full price.
