i need some info here. my local junkyard has what they call a "carrier" which it seems to me is the rear differential. it 200 and it is off a model with ABS. its off a 91. now would this be a LSD equipped diff. how could i tell if it is? and is it what i am lookin for if i want an LSD since they call it a "carrier"? any info please.

They are often referred to as a pumpkin.... I've heard them called a carrier before... but it's not a typical term for differential... so you should ask THEM what it is. If it has VLSD there are a few ways to find out. An orange sticker on the side is usually a good indication. If not, find the car it came off of... and the vehicle ID code (not VIN) will help you out. Write down the code and research it.

so just because it came off a car with ABS doesnt mean that it will be a VLSD. this "orange sticker" is it fairly durable. or am i most likely not gonna be able to see it. will there not be any other way to tell such as by the plates on the car. a code or anything? also i know you can tell by turning one wheel and the opposite wheel will do something. which way will the opposite wheel turn if it does have a LSD.

this doesn't always work, it depends on how worn the LSD is. The opposite wheel should turn the same direction if it has a LSD. If the other wheel turns the opposite direction then it DOES NOT have a LSD. The oranges stickers are gone a lot of the time.

My orange sticker is gone... but you can still see where it WAS. The vehicle ID code I mentioned before will tell you. Unfortunately I only know about the codes for 95 240s. I'm sure some research will help you find the answers. As Pablo said... the hand test doesn't always work... since it relies on a liquid heating up and expanding as the two output shafts spin independantly.. a manual hand test may not activate the LSD effect. Also... the 95 SE model was the only model that had ABS coupled with VLSD as a package. From what I have read.... every other model they could be seperate or together... just depends on the options it was ordered with.

i know that there are alot of springs out there for the 240 but which ones are some off the best. these will be used on KYB AGX struts. i want it pretty low but comfortable. like maybe 1.5 to 2 inches. i just want that unsightly wheel gap gone.

Has anyone ever used a "Phantom Grip" unit? This is a cheap alternative to a complete LSD, but still works pretty good (I heard). SCC used it in one of their project cars and they say that it is surprising how good it works.

Let me know what you think.

You are better off welding your spider gears. You will eventually either A.) keep busting welds about every month or so. OR B.) blow apart your diff. Either result is no worse than what the phantom grip will garner you.

We used to use this short cut with our trucks ALL the time. It works great, for a positive locking rear-end. But I left weak welds on mine, because I would rather have the welds break, than replace the third member, u-joint, ring and pinion, or diff gears. Better off buying a VLSD or REAL after-market option.
