i'm about to go to burlingame, CA in the morning to pick up an s14 lsd for 300. they only have the jdm ones so the s14 fits. will it make that much of a difference??

I can only imagine this will be for a viscous lsd?I personally would not pay that much for one myself. I got my S15 helical for a little bit more than that and not only does it work, I don't have to worry about it's longevity.

To answer your question, yes it will fit. You need to either swap internals, or use the S14 housing with the S13 rear cover. I thought I heard of someone making aluminum bushings to eliminate slop from the nose end when this is done. Could be wrong.

Will you notice a difference?....well... I am biased against vlsd's for more than one reason. I have been known to wring several years of service life from them. They are wear items becoming less and less capable with hard use and time. A stock powered car can exceed it's capabilities, more power and bigger, stickier tires and you will be looking for a new diff. It's just a matter of time. Lastly, when finally worn, they can not be re-built. Not economically at any rate.

All that being said, tighten your belt for a bit longer. If you have $300 for stock vlsd, save up $200 more, and a whole lot more options open up for you. Used S15 helicals, new OBX helicals (not a piece of crap surprisingly), used clutch type lsd's that CAN be overhauled down the line. That's just a suggestion. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm with Gumby. S15 helicals are deffinately the way to go. Unless you wanna dole out the bucks for a carbon lsd (which you don't because you wanna buy a vlsd for 300), then that's what I'd do, but otherwise, ya Helical.

What about a nismo 2way for OEM-open diff? Sure, it's 800, but is that going to break easy?http://www.optionimports.com/ni2waylsd892.html

Unless you are putting down some serious torque, and it is assembled incorrectly, you should get years of service life out of it.And as mentioned before, parts are available to overhaul the unit when neccessary.
