Just bought and s13 and want to do an lsd swap in some way shape or form..i have heard many ways to do it..i want to know what would be the most cost effective and least time consuming..I have heard of changing the internals, swapping the differential itself, or using a 300zx rear end..any suggestions?

From what I've seen in doing my research, changing pumpkins is the cheapest and easiest method.

I was planning to just buy a VLSD with the axles, I'm not sure if the 240 axles will work with the Z32 diff though.

Hi Edwards30

I think, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, that all of the S13 pumpkins put into Canadian cars were LSD. I know the two I've owned were. So if you want to make it a really easy swap get a Canadian pumpkin and it should bolt right in.

That link tonis56 posted pretty much covers what will and wont work.

I've messed around with these quite a bit in my 2 240's. First of all does your car have abs? If not, as most of them don't, try to make sure the car you get the diff from doesn't either. People always say "Oh the extra 3/4 inch on the snout doesn't make a difference", but I wonder how many of them have actually tried to squeeze one in there... I have, its not fun for two reasons: first is just loosening all the driveshaft and trans mount bolts so they will move a little to give you some space, then taking the biggest pry bar you can find to squeeze the damned thing in there. The second is that, it my case anyway, IT DOESN'T WORK! I don't know who started this BS that you can fit an ABS diff in there, but I tried it because the geniuses on the net all said it would work... got it all bolted together, took it out for a drive. There was the most horrible whining sound from the trans in 1st gear and when I went to shift to second, there was an even more horrible grinding sound as soon as it went into neutral. But it did still move I guess, so if thats your idea of "working," then yeah I guess it does "work." It "worked" a lot better when I swapped the differential assembly itself into my car's stock diff case. No noise, no drama, just two big black lines anytime I please. Moral of the story: either make sure the pumpkin you get is the same size as the one in your car already, or be prepared to swap cases, which is an animal in and of itself btw. Hope this helps.

on a side note, if you use an N/A 300zx diff, even if the car did have abs, it will still fit because the 300zx had 4 channel abs with the wheel speed sensors at the wheels themselves instead of 3 channel like J30's and 240's which have the rear wheel speed sensor on the snout of the diff case, which is what causes all the trouble in the first place. Long story short, the 300zx abs case is the same size as the 240sx non-abs case.

So to answer the original question, what is in my very first hand experienced opinion, the easiest way to do it is to get a pumpkin and axles from either a 91-94 J30 or a 90-96 300zx and just drop them in, because you know for a fact that they are the right size and no extra work is required, FYI swapping the axles takes literally 20 extra minutes at most so I don't count it as extra work.
