I just bought an ATS Deftforce. To install it I consulted Drift Factory's KAAZ install writeup. So, I'm lookin at this photo...

it says the gears should mesh nicely in the white spot. The red spot is a no no. The yellow spot is not as bad as the red spot.

k well I got this result:

Looks like it meshes hardest in the 'red' spot. What do you think? Is it ok or should I go buy some shims? I did not mix up left/right. They might be upside down, but how could that make a difference

o kay...

for anybody who cares, the diff is not making any abnormal noise. If i messed up the shimming the runout would be ****ed and it would audibly whine a lot. It sounds like my open diff until I make a tight turn on throttle, then it sounds like an agressive mechanical LSD. huzzah!

Yeah from what I have heard, nobody ever shims name brand clutch types. Fitment is supposedly very good.

Using grease was probably a bad way to figure out where the gear teeth are meshing. It leaves a very vague area of where the teeth actually mesh. A better way to see the wear pattern would be to use a wax crayon or paste type material that is brushed on, of say yellow or so and "paint" a few teeth on the pinion and the ring gears. Install the pieces do a few revolutions maybe 1-2 max. Check to see where the "paint" was rubbed off. It should leave a nice pattern in the middle(the white spot on your picture). Do the best you can to get it towards the middle of the ring gear, it'll cut down on wear and tear a significant amount.
