okay so I found the 240sx I am planning to buy; it is a 91 SE, all options (except it still has a 5-spd, of course). The seller has taken amazing care of this car, and he even said that when he had the differential replaced about 10k miles ago, the shop installed one with limited-slip. When I sounded surprised that he has this, he said "it better have it, that's what I paid for." I have two questions here.

1 - Have you ever heard of a mechanic or shop suggesting an LSD swap when the old diffy fails? (this guy is the type that would have paid for such an upgrade)

2 - Can any of you guys tell the difference between an LSD and non-LSD just by looking at it? I took pictures, but I do not know how to post any on the web. If there are any LSD gurus out there, I will gladly email you a pic so you make the call for yourself.

I have not asked to see his receipts; he may still have them even, so I guess that would be a good place to start.

heres a quick way to check if it IS an LSD. go to the seller with a jack in hand, and ask him if you can jack the car up for about 2 minutes. jack the rear of the car up from the rear differential, and then spin one of the rear tires. if the other tire spins the same direction as the one with your hand on it, you have lsd. if it spins the opposite way, you have an open differential.

and for the record, unless it was a performance shop that he took it to, they probably would not have recommended an LSD upgrade(being that i work at a shop), only a stock replacement.

if it has the little orange VLSD sticker than it most likely is. Are the output flanges still the 3x2 (6bolt) flanges? All you have to do is jack teh car up and turn the wheel (if bith turn same direction then its got an lsd, if one turns opposite direction than it doesnt) to see for yourself.

If this guy is teh type to pay for something like that but not even know if he has one then I would assume that even though he takes care of his car, he pays others to do it (which in a sense doesnt mean much to me).

Simply jack up the rear and see for yourself...cause the pumkins are the same and there is not a way to differentiate between teh two.

If it's a Super HICAS model, it will indeed have a VLSD stock. You can tell these rare hatches by reading "SUPER HICAS" on the rear quarter panels before the wheel wells. Otherwise, there are plenty of ghetto tests to do.
