Hello, I was just wondering... ive had my car since i was 17(now 19), and granted, when i first got it I was stupid with it (lets just say you should never get into rally-style racing when your inexperienced :\ ).

The end result was an f-ed up right rear tire (kinda bent in, with the front of the tire kinda pointing towards the front-left tire O_o) and some really scrached up rims... as far as i know. But i got that all fixed back then and alls good too my knowledge.

With that little background out of the way, on to my question.

I've read random forums and sites with info about my beautiful 240sx off and on over the years, and from what i can remember, i believe ive read that the s13 240sx SE with anti-lock brakes and super-Hicas (mine) has a LSD also.

But ive noticed, what seems like ever since the wreck i had , that the back tires dont display the characteristics of an LSD.

I.E. if i turn a corner at moderate speed, and one side of my car happens over some sand, the rear tire over the sand will slip and spin faster while the other tire just kinda just keeps chuggin along at the same speed, or a while back i gave a quick little burnout, only to go back and discover only one tire mark.

So, does this model 240sx actually come with LSD, and mines just broken, or was I hallucinating?

Thanks for the help :)

I'm pretty sure your model has the lsd, but you could have damaged something with your previous escapade. If you are still interested in keeping an operable lsd you can usually find one for around 300 or less. Lots of times people sell them on this board.

Sweet, thanks for the quick response!

Yeah, that kinda confirms what i've been thinking. THank you.

BTW, 1-10, what would you rate a diff. swap as far as difficulty is concerned? 1 being easy as pie

you might try looking under your car for a sticker on the side of the diff. It is a little orange sticker signifying an LSD.

Also if your car did come with one it's a VSLD and over time and use the thermo-reactive fluid will break down and it won't function as well

if the lsd is done then there really isnt any solution but to replace it. but using new fluid just might bring it back to life a little.

First off, the VLSD does not have a high lock-up rate so when you are putting the 2 drivewheels on vastly different surfaces, it will slip the wheel with less traction pretty aggressively.

Check for the sticker, or just put the rear end on jackstands, put the car in gear(motor off) and try to spin a rear wheel. If it spins freely, it's an open diff. If it has a lot of resistance, it's a VLSD.

As far as adding special or new fluids, it will do nothing for the VLSD. The viscous coupling is a sealed unit so fluids in the diff case do absolutely nothing to help lock-up. People often misconstrue this as it is the clutch type LSD's that are affected by the fluids in the case.
