I'm trying to learn about LSDs but so far I've got nothing but confusion. Does anybody have any opinions on the differences between Mechanical and Viscous LSDs? I'm also looking for a good 2 way LSD to install when I install the S13 SR20 in my S14 base model. So far I've seen Kaaz, Cusco, and Nismo. Anybody have any opinions on which is better? I know Kaaz just offers viscous and Nismo just offers mechanical, but cusco seems to offer both, though I couldn't really tell what I was reading. Maybe the website I was reading was just really bad at displaying its information. Thanks for the help.

I like the Kaaz b/c it's a clutch type. You can replace the clutches if they get old.

That's cool. Thanks for the help atleast. Maybe I can hope that the sound of squealing tires we'll cover up the noise :D. When I shop for one do I have to shop for my S14 chassis (non-abs) or for the S13 engine? Or are they both the same?

The Kaaz didn't make noise in mine after I broke it in for like 4000 miles.

Was looking through my brand new NISMO catalog and saw that they sell a clutch-type LSD R200 to replace the 300ZX NA VLSD. Any opinions on that vs. the VLSD?

Part # for it is: 38420-RS585

Mech VS Viscous.

Well, it really depands on what type of drving you prefer.in my point, Viscous does its job well but its response kind of sucks. It also requires to heat up liquid before it locks up the axles. Not a good choise for hardcore drivers. However, on street it is smooth the noise level in general is minimized. If you are not a hardcore guy. just get a Viscous from Junkyard or so.

If you are interested in competition or occassionally burning tires such as drifting, then Mech LSD is the best way to go. quick response but downside is it requires more maintain; something like changing diff oil more often and need to reserve the backlash every 3 or 5 years ( depends on how you trash your car, hehe)

Well, aftermarket LSD could be quiet, My TRD on AE86 was pretty good only making noise at low speed and tight turn. says 1, 2 gear. Keep in mind properly break in LSD is the key to minimize noise.

Hum, since KAAZ has an official distributer here in State, you might want to get one as NISMO and Other brands might be hard to get and bit pricy. For KAAZ you could get a decent LSD with oversized clutch plates which last a bit longer than other brands.

As for application of KAAZ, if you have a 95-96 S14 with an open diff, you need a DAN2620 ( 1.5 or 2 way) along with NISSAN OEM side flanges. The parts numbers for flanges are 38220-41F01 or 38220-52F01. for Viscous LSD equipped 95-96 S14, all you need is DAN2625. as for 97-98 S14, I am not 100 % sure what you can get.

BTW, for noise level, Mech LSD does not necessarily make noise, however most of good after market LSDs do make some noise. so you kind of have to live with it, but I don't really care as the performance it gives is hard to beat.

GOOD LUCK

I would go with quaife and day over anything else. It does not wear out so it never need new clutches, need no braking time, and if it does break its warrented for life.

Why aftermarket? Unless you are really hardcore and going drifting at track events all the time just get a 300zx LSD or the one out of the Infiniti.........$700 for aftermarket is ridiculous unless you are THAT serious....

I still have my open rear on my SR20det 240sx. WOO WOO :ylsuper :D
