I'm really tired of just one wheel spinning so I started looking at LSD swaps. On ebay, I found this LSD insert that claims to lock your back wheels. What can you all tell me about this?

Can you post the link to the auction? That way we can tell you what it is.

It prob does the same thing as welding the rear end. In that case its locked its not limited slip.~Sam

This isnt the exact one I was looking at, but essentially the same thing. Speedfreak Racing makes one, so does Phantom Grip.

Hmmm.... looks to be as KoukiKA says. It'll lock your rear end permanently, so it'll squeel your tires on turns... Not really sure what good this will do, your cornering will be horrible.

unless you're drag racing, those rear end lockers won't do you any good. And for the cost of them, I'd rather spend a few hundred more and get a real LSD

So what harm will locking the back end do? I know both wheels will always spin, instead of the power going to the one with grip. But either way the wheel with grip is still getting power. It seems it would be divided 50/50 all the time, so where's the bad?

When any vehicle makes a turn the wheels on the inside spin at a different speed than the outside wheels because the outside wheels have further to travel. The purpose of any differential is to allow this to take place and keep the car comfortable. If it is locked the car feels and sounds like crap in daily driving conditions. The rear end will make popping and screeching noises as you turn the wheel even a little bit at lower speeds. The rear end of the car has to actually hop around corners.

If you want a locked rear end like this just save urself the money and have a shop weld it, it does the same thing. My explanation may not be great but u get the jist.

I have a 180sx lsd in my car and love it. around town i dont notice it untill i decide to step on the gas and the rear end locks up and helps me rotate around the corner. Nice and smooth, nothing sudden.~Sam

Sounds like a definate no on the inserts, and for that matter welding also. Thanks guys, I guess I'll keep ebaying for my differential unless you've got better ideas... or want to sell yours.

actually, the dont fully lock the wheels.

the insert its a two piece bar of metal with springs inbetween the halfs. the spring causes the two blocks to preload the pinions in the differential so the wheel with less grip wont spin as easily.

it takes more of a traction differential between the two drive tires before one will spin.

BUT it has a limited lifespan, only works to a point [no where near as good as a real LSD], and isnt all that good for the diff.

i never recommend them. for the amount it costs, and the amount of work to properly install it, your only a few hundred short of a real LSD.

get a used VLSD if its a daily driver.

the difference between an open diff and a LSD on launch is around .1 g's.

the difference between regular all season tires, and good sticky tires is even greater.

basically, its a waste of time and money.
