I need to know what the difference between 1.5 way and 2 way LSDs is? What LSD off of what car has either 1.5 or 2 way LSD?

for example would a stock 180sx LSD be 1.5 or 2 way

would a stock 240sx LSD be 1.5 or 2 way?

or a 2 ways only aftermarket?

Im verry confused. I searched and my question wasn't answered. Please offer your input.

thanks

stock S13/S14s came with whats called Viscous LSD...its a one way ONLY LSD...the S15 came with whats called Helical...also 1 way...all stock nissan LSDs are one way on the S bodies

1 way lsd means its only locked when you are accelerating

1.5 way means that the LSD is locked when you accel and half locked when your decel (im not sure to what torque point though)

2 way is always locked

i have a 2 way ATS clutch type LSD in my car...it works very well...but mind you this...if you go with a REAL aftermarket LSD (not some crap add in for yer open diff off ebay) like KAAZ Cusco or ATS i warn you this:

90% OF ALL AFTER MARKET LSDS ARE NOISEY AND CLUNKY AND DO REQUIRE A FAIR AMOUNT OF ATTENTION

i have a clutch type LSD which means it uses little clutch plate discs inside that lock and unlock...my lsd is EXTREMELY loud and clunky at low torque...im not sure on mechnical LSDs as far as sound and ride quality goes...but if you want something that will keep yer ride quality go with a stock J30 lsd (same as the 240 LSD just easier to get a hold of)

but if youre looking for something that will work well on track (drift auto X road racing) then go with a 1.5 way or 2 way...its personal preference mostly for deciding on which one to get...i perfer the 2 way LSDs..also if you do go aftermarket be aware that you will be spending alot of money on gear oil for yer LSD...it is recommended that after each event with hard driving you change your gear oil...other wise you run the risk of ruining yer LSD as the oil will break down after a fair amount of hard driving on it

on stock Viscous LSDs...they will wear out after ALOT of hard use...also once they get hot they will stop working as a LSD until they cool back down (the silicon gets too hot to grip the plates)

It depends on the year. The late model 95 and newer will drop in. The old model 95 and older will need correct output shafts or axles.

So you're saying that the Kaaz and nismo drop-in lsd into open diff is crap????

no im talking about that stupid add on for the open diff (not open diff shafts) i dont remember what its called...it goes between the center gears in the open diff itself...i think its called like phantom lock or something like that...dont bother wasting yer money on something that just upgrades the stock oepn diff (like having someone weld it or a phantom grip) spend the money and get a nice KAAZ or NISMO or ATS or Cusco...they are worth it in the long run...they will hold up to the abuse you throw at them if you take care of them

ok, just double checking. And yes it is Phantom Grip. I hear it works if you get the upgraded spring and have your spider gears machined correctly.

will putting in the j30 lsd with the new output shafts or axles (for an 89) be about as much work as making a 300zx lsd fit? i got some pics and instructions on how to do the 300 z swap, here is the link if you wanna look. http://www.gbauto.net/crzycav86/axle_swap.htmyou have to modify the 300z and 240 axles to fit, there is some welding involved.

its not worth the trouble to get one of those..it really isnt...if the ONLY THING ur gonna do is drag race...then i guess they work ok...but if ur gonna do AutoX drift or road racing then u need something a bit better than a snap on part for yer open diff

:)

I don't recommend doing it that way unless you already have the 300zx axles, or unless you can't find a j30 differential(output shafts or axles). It may be a bit cheaper that way, but you'd only save like $50 I'd say. Maybe it's worth the extra work... but to some it won't be.
