I need to replace my lower shift boot. Its the one that actuially goes on the transmission and the shifter.

I don't see how to get it off the shifter because the hole is to small to go over the 'pivot ball?' and it's also to small to go up the shaft.

How do you get this off?

Actuially i should say that mine is torn so i only ned to know how to get a new one on without tearing it.

My transmission oil is frothing out of the hole and ending up on the road.

Cut the old one off. The new one will be in a lot better shape than your current one is. You will have to take your shift knob off (should already be off) and the small end will slide/strech over the shift lever. I know it looks impossible, but it will work, I promise. I've done it on all 4 of my 240's and never had a problem. You will want to use zip-ties to secure it to the transmission and the shift lever.

The shift boot should just slide up and over the shifter, if I recall.

Why is your gear oil "frothing" out of the hole, even without a boot?

Because w/o the boot, you are basically looking straight into the transmission. The pivot joint for the shifter is there, but you can pour oil right on top of it if you wanted to. (thats how I fill it actually)

I just removed one from stock shifter to put on a short shifter. I pulled it right off. Just put some back into it

I just did mine last night as the wrapup of a 5 spd swap.

Of course, cut the old one off...it'll rip anyways.

1. Put a little Marvel Mystery Oil on the boot (this stuff does wonders for rubber...makes it last forever)2. Install your shifter, puton the snapring, etc3. Put the boot over the shifter handle and just keep pulling...it'll stretch like crazy, but eventuallly it'll just pop on there. 4. Put a big zip tie around the base, and a small zip tie around the top of the boot

Now just put the upper boot & your interior back in...:D
