lowering springs/coilovers

Hi guys, I need a little help here. I have a 91 coupe non hicas with new kyb gr-2 shocks/struts but stock springs. Theyre kinda springy and I want to lower my car anyways. I hear that the gr-2s can only handle a 1.5 inch drop, so does that mean that if i get springs that are lower, the shocks will blow? or how exactly would that harm the shocks? Also would I be ok if i got coilover springs and set them to a 1 inch drop?
